medicine hat,
i was told that to remove the engine out of my car that you have to pull the engine out through the bottom of the car...is this true???? how long does it ussually take to remove and put a different motor in these cars??

The reason why I had to remove the axles was because when I lifted up the engine the axles attached would lift up the car. Well you can always whack off the suspension or remove the bolt from the suspension fork (at the bottom where the axle passes through) and that lets the axle drop.

For me I had to remove the driver side axle.

Or you can use an 1 1/4 for the axles. And a pickle fork to get the axclea out of the trans

passenger side axle on the 1g's is a pain to pop out if its stuck!, and its a 32mm for the axle nuts, i dont know who said 36 but its not a 36 its 32, well mine was anyways.

The best way to pull the engine/trans is out the bottom, if you have access to a lift your set, you can even leave the axles attached if you want and just pop them out after.

Im guessing you don't have a lift though, so you will need an engine hoist, and a leveler as stated.

Pull the driveshaft as 1 piece, i found that easier, and these cars are nice with the cable linkage, nothing like trying to lay under there and pound on that roll pin on the honda shifter linkages that run under the car.. anyways.

Goodluck!

This is what I do. Get front up on jackstands. Disconnect and pull battery. Put key in ignition turn so steering is unlocked. Pull wheels, pull 12mm bolts that hold brake lines to struts. Pull both 17mm bolts on each strut. Seperate knuckles from struts. Go to passenger side pull tie rod all the way towards you (like making a left turn) Small pry bar to pop the passenger side axle out. Take axle and twist it up and around the transmission (the axle will go up and over the trans right under the tranny mount and the body) the axle will be now towards the wheel liner (this will only work if both knuckles are seperated and hanging so sway bar is down). Next move to the driver side. Unbolt the 2 14mm half shaft bolts. Pull steering all they way to you (making a right turn) then pull the half shaft out of the trans and you can put it towards the subframe or just under the trans. Done axles are cleared, engine can come up or trans can come out.

Now you don't have to worry about anything. You don't have to worry about damaging your outter tie rods with a pickle fork (which they make a small tie rod puller which won't damnage the boots or joint) and you don't have to retorque your axles. You can put your car down and roll it with out having to ruin your wheel bearings, just tie up the axles.

Its way faster this way, I just looks like a lot. I used to work on these cars as a job. We'd pull engines for rebuilds but need to move the car. You can't do that with out axles or you'll risk ruining the bearings. And if you removed the tie rods you can't steer.

when i had to remove my engine out of my 2g fwd auto the only way i could get the engine out was out of the bottom becasue the engine had seized and i could spin the crank to un bolt the torque converter and with the converter on the absoult only way i could get it out was out of the bottom. i had the head, all the accessorys and it unbolted from the trans and everything off.

I've done everything I can think of and I can't remove the passenger side drive shaft it's killing me I need to get the old motor out to see if I can use it. Does any one know an engine removal process that doesn't include removing the trans??? Or what method do you use to remove the drive shaft I've tried pry bar screwdrive method from vfaq to no avail/

First check where that shaft enters the transmission - i don't believe there is a keeper pin going thru the shaft but it's something to look for.

Next grab that shaft, push it in towards the transmission HARD. Pull it away from the transmission HARD. Repeat. The shaft will snap out of the tranny, or the inside boot will move or even break, but either way the shaft will come out and let you pull the engine.

I've torn up quite a few shafts and autozone never asks any questions, they give me a free one under the 'lifetime warranty'.

:)

Also, this question would best fit in the "newbie" forum or problem diagnosis.

so there is people out there that takes them out from the bottom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i tried once from the top with trans connected, and bent crank pulley all up

There's a bit of difference between pulling 1g's and 2g's it seems as well as if you have a lift or not. For a 1g I still drop the trans through the bottom first, then yank the engine straight up and out 2nd.

I just lift the motor out by hand, because I am strong, like ox! jk, I'm just trying to add some humor to the thread

that how you get so many posts LOL

Yea it's easier to do te tranny from the bottom. Thats how many shops do clutch installs. If only you have access to a lift then it's easier if not you'll e like me and other dsm'ers and lift up the engine by the top.

The axle nut is a 32mm. 19, 17, 14 and 12mm's will also be needed. You will also probably need some way to cut off the exhaust. I use the fire saw and just cut the nuts off. Other than that its pretty straight forward.

after you get all the obvious sensors and wires unhooked from the engine, go to the autoparts store and get a ball joint tool. Then pop all of your ball joings, which loosens up your axels. Then use the same ball joint tools to pop out the axels from the transmission. Now hook up the engine lift and unhook all the mounts and raise the engine and the transmission together! Make sure you mark every wire and senor you removed with a pernament marker and 3M masking tape. This will make for a pretty smooth removal process. Hope that helps and good luck :dsm:

Hey guys first of all thank you for helping me out.

I am attempting to remove my engine from my transmission and then out of the car. I have everything disconnected attached to the engine including the mounts besides from the bolts that attach the engine and transmission.

What i need from you is this. I have removed the bolts circled in yellow. (the one to the farthest left is the one right next to the motor mount connection.)

Now i think i am missing at least one bolt on the bottom of the car but i have take off all of the bolts that i THINK are attaching the engine and tranny.
Where are the bolts located that attach the engine and tranny on the bottom side?
Are any of these them (circled in yellow) or are they just holding the transfer case to the tranny like i think?

(the blue line is where i think the engine stops is this correct??)

If you need a picture of the bottom side of the engine to circle which bolts i need to undue i got plenty just ask.

Thank you again I am so close to taking this engine out i just need to get these bolts out and i am quite tired and frustrated.

If there arent any bolts left to be undone please let me know how i disconnect these 2 parts

There is a small bolt on the back side right next to the rear engine mount on the bottom its a 12mm besure you take out the 10mm on the scatter sheild. Why dont you just pull the engine and tranny out at one time. There is 4 14mm bolts that hold the tranny mount to the side. If you look at the passanger wheel well you will see 4 ruber boosts pop those off and you will see the bolts much easier to pull tranny and motor out at one time but if you want to do the way you are then go ahead.
