my engine makes a tapping noise its consistent with the revs of the motor
as the rpm's go up the tapping noise go's up.
but if i let the car sit at idle for awhile and listen to the noise it will get really loud then go away all at once then it comes back in about 5 seconds.
after i drive the car for awhile sometimes it goes away and sometimes it doesnt.
does anyone know what this noise is. Im guessing it might be the lifters?
also it sounds like its coming from the top of the valve cover.
thanks.
forgot to mention i never updated my profile its a 96 gst not the 1G in the pic
82k on the clock

i just changed the oil today and i upped it to 10w40
how do i adjust my valve lash<
also i dont want to mess with something if im not sure its the problem

Check your timing to make sure it didnt skip a tooth or so. Get some lifter cleaner.

Dustin

when i check the timinig how will i know if it skipped a tooth
is there a dot on the gear and a dot on the belt??

more than likely its the lifters. mine does the same.

Try cleaning them with a friend that has some more experience:
http://www.vfaq.com/mods/lifters.html

and get an oil change with the correct amount of oil. i had my oil changed at walmart not too long ago (### im lazy) and they never put in enough oil and it seemed like the lifters ticked a lot more until i put in more oil.

I'm 99% sure its your lifters. Mine did the same thing. If I rev ed it up it would go away for seconds, then come back. I bought 3g lash lifters and followed the lifter install and it was done in about a hour or so. Oh and once you finish, they will tick LOUD REALLY LOUD until you drive around for a minute at high RPM. Good Luck

Its most likely the lifters, so follow that VFAQ, and if it goes away go get some revised lifters.

Dustin

thanks for all the info, i guess im gonna buy some lifters this weekend, are there any performance lifters out there?

If its not lifters it could be a bent rod or worn bearings Try pulling one plug wire at a time while the motor is running and see if the noise goes away. If it does thats a pretty clear indication theres something not right with the bottom end.

Although you didn't find any of the thousand of posts about "tapping", common causes can be: rod bearing knock, balance shaft bearing knock, lifter tapping, failed harmonic balancer, exhaust leak and crankwalk.

Please search before posting a repeated thread.

Thank you.
