All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Doubtful. Even if the crank looks good, I would bet cash that the big end of the rod is distorted and out of spec.

You only have .0007 from Hi to low spec on the big end bore.

At a min, the head would have to come off and have that rod checked.

dang .0007. Thats almost perfect. yeah im sure it got past that spec with damage.

So today i was driving the car, not beating on it at all, and when I'm decelerating i can hear a loud knocking coming from the front right of the car. If im under any sort of acceleration or load it goes away, then when i let off it will start knocking again for a few seconds until i start loosing speed and slowing down, then it goes away. Sound like its coming from in from of the passenger footwell. I'm hoping its not my transmission, car shifts fine into all gears and reverse, no grinding to popping(5speed). Also when i shift it will knock quick until i release the clutch and give it load again. Sounds to me like it's my axle. Also its the same in EVERY gear at any speed, and again, it happens when i let off the gas, turning or not turning.

By the way, the knocking is quite loud and rather scary sounding.

Hi I just installed a low mileage jdm 7 bolt from Tiger motors
and im running a used oem evo3 16g. I'm pretty sure I have
Everything hooked up as it should be, but when the engine fires
Up it starts making a knocking noise ; ( . What could this be
It dose it then stops for a second then starts knocking again.
The engine dose not smoke and fires rite up and has good oil
Pressure.
Please HELP 1998 GST 5spd

could be a rod knock, could be piston slap, could be valves hitting, could be a random vibration , could be something in the timing belt and accessory belt area hitting something. Could be alot of things no way to tell you for sure over the internet really. Check everything external engine around moving parts be careful do not get sucked it, for loose parts hitting something or rattling. If you do not find anything with a visual go buy a stethoscope and you can pin point if you have a rod knock or something else. If it is rod knock coming from lower engine might as well get your cherry picker ready.

i'd start with visually inspecting that area, like ^^ said, cv joint, if the boot is leaking grease and devloping play, it could cause this sound. otherwise, check your bushings and ball joints, fluid level in your trans.

hope you're able to figure it out!

keep us posted

As long as it's got good oil pressure and it's coming from the head then- let it warm up fully and see if it goes away. From your description now it just sounds like a noisy lifter. Should quiet down once warm.

Can you get a video of it after checking the oil? I have a good feeling it's the lifter, but don't take my judgement without further testing.

Get a mechanics stethoscope and see if its coming from the head, or the block.

If its the head, its lifters and you will 100% fine.

Yea it sucks if it is a rod because I was told I was getting a
Good running low milage engine. An that's alot of money
to throw away I due not recommend Tiger motors to anyone
And the best part is im about a week over my 30 day warranty.
I will call them tommorrow and see if they can due something
About this an keep you all posted.
Thanks for the help and keep posting what you guys think it is :(

Yea I should have new better than to buy one like that
But I was just lookin for an easy way out. But lesson learned
If I can't get a new engine from them I will just have to leave my losses
Behind me and just build my own.
Thanks again for everyones opinion
