All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Only $1200 for a motor that throws a rod in less than a month.

Hell of a deal! :thumb:

Ehhh luck of the draw i say. I bought a 6-bolt motor from them back in 08 or 09 for $1700 (motor, awd trans, ecu) I drove the car a little more than 20k before i sold it, never had a issue with internals or anything for that matter.
Ive always wondered if there actually motors from japanese cars! Their based out of Canada of all places. The only indication it was was the ### writing on the oil cap and themostat cap.
"Supposedly" Japan requires a yearly emissions test and if you fail you have to junk the car or buy a new motor. But thats all he say she say crap.

*Update*

I posted in this thread a long long time ago about my cold start engine noise/buzzing (with video) and think I have solved it today. It appears that the tbelt job the previous owner did all they changed was the belts and nothing else. :ohdamn: I pulled out all the old rusty factory original pulley's and tensioner today and this is what they all sounded/looked like. Mind you this previous tbelt job was done about 20k miles or less ago and they used NAPA belts :( That old tensioner was so worn out you could push the rod almost all the way down with your finger hence the reason the tbelt skipped a tooth on the crank.

Bad bearing huh?

So earlier today I was working on my car cleaning the throttle body and replacing air filter I noticed while I idle I hear a knocking sound. I checked if any of my spark plug wires were unplugged but what I did notice is that if I press down on spark plug 1 the knock gets louder. And same for cylinder 3. What could be going on here? I might get a video of it tomorrow and post the link here if that might help finding out what that noise is

I'm having a problem with a taping/ vibration sound that my 90 GSX has. This sound only occurs when the car is at or near operating temperature. It only happens at and above 1500 RPM or so. It sounds like its coming from the timing belt area or from under the valve cover. The sound still occurs with all belts removed. And here is a link to what it sounds like [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4fnyqTNpEs[/ame] . Let me know what you think. I'm leaning towards hydraulic tensioner.

Thank you,
Scott Y.

Rule out exhaust leaks first -with the car running, suck up 1/3 a can of sea foam via brake booster vacuum line then shut off the car. Wait 30mins-2hrs then fire it up. Any exhaust leaks will be very visible now... and so will the piles and piles of smoke your tailpipe emits for the next 30mins. I wouldn't advise this in a tight neighborhood, probably get some unwanted attention haha.

And yes an exhaust leak can make things sound funny.

Ok ...let me preface this just a bit...
- no codes being thrown, just replaced the lifters, and belts. Brand new pcv valve w/ a check valve in line.

Now the car idles and drives fine, compression is good across the board. The sounds occurs when you rev the engine and sounds like something is loose. It is not a consistent sound, although it is clearly there...meaning you can rev and it sounds horrible, rev it again and it doesn't sound quite as bad...but clearly still there. Almost sounds like a slapping sound of sorts.

Now the car has always lacked "pep", and I attributed that to the higher mileage, and being automatic, but when you get on it...it goes like a bat outta hell.

I did recently change out the plugs and wires...but I was thinking maybe I got bad wires, or maybe I need a new coil pack...but like I stated, the car runs fine...so I am stumped...any help?

Crankwalked sounds like

I don't think he would be able to rev it up if it was crankwalked so please don't just go and jump on that Bandwagon and give people misinformation.

Could be a spun bearing? My car sounded similar when it happened to me.

*Take it apart mine sounded the same and the little groove that is on the bearing that makes it stay in place was flattened out so the bearing would just rotate with the crank.

Also don't use a cork gasket on your oil pan, RTV only or your oil pan will leak.

well you lost two rod bearings. you will most likely have to pull the motor and get all the shaving out. its hard to say if there is alot or nothing at all without pulling it. you dont want the metal going through your engine oil obviously. you can keep the engine in and pull the head and see if the rod bearings dont need over sized but this is much easier on an engine stand then in the engine bay.

i doubt it since the sound it was making in the video was pretty bad in my eyes. you might have caught it before serious damage happend. usually when your motor spins a bearing you want to make sure all the tolerences are in spec because you never know by looking. you need to inspect your rod journals to see if they have any issues like gouges or deep scratches.

Pull the motor and freshen it up the 98-99 block are awesome. Sad to say you have to do it, but your half way there.
