Tapping Noise

Ok, my car used to just make a tapping sound when I started it up sometimes in the mornings, but after driving a block or so, it would stop. Probably just the hydraulic lifters. Recently I brought my car up to 7300 rpm in 3rd gear, just for a second, and continued pushing it a little into 4th, and when I got off the freeway and started driving through the city I noticed a tapping sound. Going through a drive through KFC I noticed a tapping sound fairly loud, and when I got home and popped the hood, I heard a loud tapping sound seemingly from the valve cover. The sound level doesn't seem to increase much with the rpm's, just the frequency of the taps. Also, when I popped my hood I noticed that my oil breather thing at the top left nipple on my head had been ripped off somehow. I am scared to go back out there to start it up, please let me know if anyone has any ideas on what it could be.

check your oil...i heard the same noise and i busted a rod..which means i got to buy a new engine...i was runnin dry on oil and didnt know because the oil light never came on

I changed my oil, it was low. Ran it for about 5 minutes, took it on a 5 minute drive, sound let up a little bit maybe (maybe just wishful thinking ) but it definitely didn't work like I'd hoped... Would I just have to let it go for a little longer? Seems like it should be pretty immediate as soon as I got some oil in there... Anyone else have any ideas???

Ok, I ran it for about 20 minutes more of driving, and It has completely subsided, at least for now... Screw oil... Thanks Playboy Oh yeah, major props to Jesus, who answered my prayers of no Rod Knock... This ones for you Buddy
