I'll try to explain this the best I can, without rambling. It's a little long so bear with me.
I purchased my car completely stock. One of the first items I purchased was a turbo timer (HKS Type 2). I used a harness for plug and play, but for added features, the instructions told me to wire the RPM and Speed and Ground signal wires directly into the ECU. As most of you know, there are three plugs that go into the ECU. The fattest/longest plug was the one it told me to wire into. Blue to blue(RPM), red to red(Speed), and black to ground (colors may have been different, idk). I stripped a piece off each wire, tee-d the correct one into it, and everything was working fine.I did not use any of those plastic connectors, I just wrapped the wire around the other. Everything was workin. i was getting digital RPM and speed. sweeeeeet.
So a few weeks pass by. I go to turn my car on. Turn the key and EVERYTHING shuts off. Just like the negative battery terminal was completely removed. But you could faintly see the accessory lights. I go out and pop the hood, loosen the negative terminal (which was COMPLETELY tight before) and wiggled it a little bit. Re-tightened it and tried to start it again. Same thing. Did the same procedure again and it started right up, oddly. Confused
Went to drive it that night and my dash gauges and tail lights were out, and stayed out. The 10Amp fuse kept blowing every time for the tail lights, but not the gauges. Wtf??
About 2 days later it didn't start again and i thougth maybe replacing the actual negative post and clamp that connects to the terminal would help (mine were a little corroded). Did not help at all. So I retraced my steps and decided to check out the connections that i made at the ECU when I installed my turbo timer. Sure enough, the ground connection (the actual wire going INTO the plug... was frayed. Instead of it being a tightly packed wire, some of it was spliced and it wasn't making a good ground. I re-cut and re-wired this. I also removed the RPM and Speed sensor wires that came from the timer. Put everything back together, and started it up, seemed to work fine. Checked my gauges and tail lights and both were on with no problems, no blow fuses or anything. Still both work to this day.
Everything was great for a few weeks, then about a week ago it rained HARD. Went to go on my break from work, tried to start it and YEP. Everything in the car shuts off completely. woooooow. Popped the hood, wiggled that ground on the battery, and it started up fine.
I have heard a few different ideas about the solution to this.... one was the altenator. Another was my battery was bad. Another was the ground wire at the ECU Plug was still not wired properly. Does anyone know what the hell the problem could be??
