EGR wiring, no voltage?

According to the manual the EGR Sol. connector should have 5v at the connector. Does the engine have to be running for this 5v to register? I can't start my car at the moment. But with the Ignition in the on position I get no voltage at this connector? Is this normal?

Did you wire it correctly? What wires for which pins? But usually the car would need to be on to register voltage.

Yes, the car would have to be at least in the ON position in order for it to register power to the Solenoids.

Did you do your own wiring to it. Are you getting a CEL? What caused you to check this wire for voltage?

Wait, are you sure it shouldn't be 12V? This is a 1g DSM we're talking about right?

Where in the manual did you find that?

There are two pins, one is connected to the MPI power (+12v) and the other runs to the ECU. To activate the solenoid the ECU pulls it's side low and cause current to flow. The ignition needs to be in RUN or START for there to be power at the solenoid but the engine doesn't need to be running.

IIRC, On 1G's only the California and Federal 94's use the EGR solenoid. Are you trying to use the connector for something else?

I'll post up a screen shot of where I found this in the manual when I get home. It was in a 90 shop manual. I'm not sure if was the EGR sol. or the california EGR temp sensor now that I think of it.

The car is a 1g it was in the "on" position. Just not running.

I've honeslty never seen a DSM with the EGR still in place so I don't know 100% what the EGR plug looks like. The only plugs I don't have hooked up that I can clearly see are the fuel pressure sol. and this 2 pin connector. it's a long wire with it's own ribbed casing probably about 12-14" long or so connects to the main harness somewhere behind the center intake manifold.

I'm just looking for a 5v source for a project. Preferably one that is not in use by another "important" sensor. Someone had told me the EGR circuit has a 5v source. I'm just tapping it for a voltage ref. point.

There is only one +5v source, that being the one for the various sensors and not a good place to add additional stuff.
