ECU resetting

how can I reset my ECU??? i have brought an ECU MD169144 and the original ECu was MD 166255 and does resetting the ECU will solve the knock errors problems?

I doubt resetting the ECU will solve your knock error problem, but to reset it, just unhook the negative battery cable for a few minutes.

I think it needs to be unhooked for 20 minutes.

I have brought an ECU MD169144 and the original ECU was MD 166255.

You sure you don't have those numbers backwards? The MD166255 is a 6/90-5/93 US Federal MT NA FWD ECU and doesn't have a knock sensor board.

I don't have numbers for non-US parts but I suspect the MD169144 is a export Turbo ECU. Here in the States with Federal emissions that car would have been equiped with a MD166260 if it is a 5 speed or MD165529 as an automatic.

So which ECU is which?

15 seconds is enough to reset the ecu. It just needs enough time for power to drain out of the capacitors. When I reset mine for tuning, I only have the cable off for 10-15 seconds.

Thanks guys this really helped me out.... I reset my ecu the other day and it didn't solve my problem. Since I replaced the bad sensor that the diagnostics was throwing up, should I reset it again????
