Alright guys, let's get into this.

About a year ago my dad bought me this 1995 Eagle Talon TSi AWD

Then a few weeks later my dad seen this car at a local auction and bought it. 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T

I was...lost when it came to words. Here I was, 15, and my dad just bought me two DSMs. I had no clue what to think.

My dad and I spent the next 9months to a year taking my Talon from what it was in the picture above to this:

After many comments back and forth with my dad, I said I wanted to build the engine in my Talon. I mean after all, it was a project car. I couldn't though because my dad for bayed me from touching the engines in either car. So I'm left sitting here saying "What the f*ck?" and looking like WTF.

My dad knows I'm going into the high performance engine industry when I graduate from high school, yet he won't allow me to mess around with my own cars? Well, HIS cars. He would always refer to them as his when this subject came up. Any other time they were my cars.

So after seeing many people's builds and having a growing love for 1gs, I decided to look for one for myself. I found one and went and bought this for $600:

The guy I bought it from has had many DSMs and actually still had one in his garage. He just needed the car gone because he just moved into a new house and was getting notices from the city he has to move it and stuff. He gave me ALMOST two of everything. He missed things like the intake manifold and such but oh well. He said he would give me whatever I needed for free when and if I find out I am missing something.

I knew when I bought the car it wouldn't come with a turbo, turbo manifold, ECU, or engine harness. I figured DSMLink v3 with a new ECU from ECMLink/Tuning. Holset hx35/40, custom twin-scroll turbomanifold and so on. I'm only 16 though. That might take me awhile.

But I said oh well. I figured it could be a long term project. Well, now after I buy it, my dad says he would rather I spent money doing engine work to one of my other cars.. Now I'm totally like WTF. You say I can't touch them, now I spend $600 on a shell, engine, trans, and all this other stuff to build MY own car, and NOW I can "soup up" on of YOUR cars? Wow... Thanks.

So I said fine, screw it. I'm sticking with the 1g.

Today I wanted my dad to pay a guy through PayPal for a wastegate. He was looking at it and starting saying how I should stop with this '91 because it's worthless. And he would rather see me buy a nicer 1g, that is running and do stuff to it.

My point to him was, if you buy one, it's probably going to be moded, then I might have to deal with someone else's f*ck ups. That and I don't have the money to buy a decent 1g right now. I would have to save up from a good year if not more! I'm not willing to have to wait that long. And I've already got the 1g I have now.

He started insulting the car saying my 95 was way better than the 91 BEFORE we started working on it. Then he was saying because the passenger quarter panel got hit, that if he were to write an estimate, they (my dad and uncle), would replace the whole panel. I said cool, but you don't HAVE to replace it. But with a smart ass attitude, he came back with a "Yes you would." Then he said "Fine, do it. Keep this car. But I'm not helping on this one. I'm not doing any body work to it." So I finally said I'm done. Don't use your PayPal account to buy the wastegate I don't care. Don't work on the body even though you're my dad, and you own a body shop.

I'll just send the guy a money order instead of paying you back for using the PayPal account. And the body work I'll have to learn myself.

But then I got to thinking; NONE of my cars are worth fixing then.

My '95 was in an accident before. The driver's side of the frame is tweaked. The headlight sits so far out because the fender sits so far back, that we painted some of the headlight so it would look right. It also needs rear control arm bushing, and new tires. It also has an exhaust leak at the manifold. On top of all this, it's an automatic. Don't get me wrong, it's fast! I just like a manual car better.

My '99 is ok. But the driver's side strut tower is starting to rust and the passenger side was so bad the original owner cut it out and tack welded sheet metal in its place. On top of that, it's a FWD and the syncros kind of feel like they are starting to go out on the car. It also has nasty paint chips on the hood/front bumper. Then door dings ALL over it.

My '91 is a shell. 'Nuff said. I have to build the engine, do the body work, do the wiring harness, buy all the parts, put it together, trouble shoot when something goes wrong. I have to do everything.


So here is the question I will ask you all;

What should I do?

I need input because right now everything just doesn't seem worth keeping or fixing or anything!

Fix your 1g. It's going to cost a pretty penny, but in the end its YOUR car. Seems like your dad wants the other 2 built to whatever he decides. If you throw a bunch of money into his cars he could decide to say he's taking them and there's nothing you can do about it. The 1g on the other hand YOU own. Is the 1g awd/5 speed? If not it may be worth using it as a parts car and find a project awd 1g.

I would start with the cleanest shell possible whether it is yours or your dads (unless your looking for a sleeper). will he let you buy one of his 2gs if you sell the 1g? IMHO buy the red 2g from him and source the parts for an awd swap.

If you're lucky enough to have your dad, I still do thank god, show interest in DSM's WITH him. I enjoyed hunting and fishing with my dad (he hates cars) and sometimes we'd get in some big arguments about it. Being 10 years older I look back and wish I hadn't, hes your dad and as much as it seems he's trying to be unfair there might be a method to his madness. You should (calmly) ask your dad which route you should take with the cars you've got together, if he disagrees with modifying them try to suggest at least getting ECMLink without getting mad. Its not a performance modification and you'll be able to practice tuning and learning how it works, its a win win. If he still bats that idea down get on ECMLink's website and let him read a bit about it because honestly, the best thing you can do to a stock DSM is get Link for it.

If it were up to me and I could only choose one car I'd go with the A/T AWD DSM. The A/T AWD's don't break drivetrain parts at the track and cut EXTREMELY fast and consistent 60fts. It might not be fun to drive now but trust me when I say, there is nothing fun about driving a DSM with an ACT Twin Disk in traffic. NOTHING.

Very rarely do any of us have a perfect DSM. I waited 8 years constantly searching to find the perfect 99 GSX and let me tell you that it is far from perfect. I have one of those Non-modified virgin cars that was old guy driven, drove the car only on sunny days, low mileage, and every service record from the mitsu dealer showing maintenance like clock work. The point being a lot of us have really clean cars but we have either worked painfully on them or over time made things right. But ask any one of us and we can still go a mile long of things that could be replaced, fixed, tweaked, ect... Everyone but Brian (Snowboarder, check out his fuse box relocation if you don't know who I am talking about)

All this being said our ladies are OLD, they are not brand new tight and sparkly, they are overweight, abused, and under appreciated (as I say this I am rubbing the dash on mine saying not you sweety...). You have a really good base to work with. The question is which one do you want to do. If you love 1G but your dad is saying the 95 is better I would have to agree, because your shell looks really rough. I don't think you can even begin to imagine how much that car is going to take to get it to your level of satisfaction. Ball park figure but with your goals 10K EASY.

On the side note a manual is fun to drive, but I wouldn't trade anything for my auto. It's consistent, builds boost at the light, shifts faster than I can a manual, easy to drive in traffic, I haven't had one break on me yet (knock on wood), and cheaper to upgrade.

Build the 95 with your dad, learn it up, then when you have a good base for yourself, and a pile of money saved jump into the 1G. A stock 2G is pretty fun, but your did is going to ***t his pants if you take him for a ride in it if it has an hx-35 or even a highly boosted 16G. If your dad is old school like me then he knows muscle cars, he won't know what to do with himself if your running a good setup and you blow the socks off a vette. Once you open his eyes about what these Gilsonite can do he might be a lot more willing to see a 1G.

So build the 95, use parts from the 99 and the shell, or sell both those and use for parts on the 95. Also if you just have to do a 1G you can find them for close to what you paid but in 1000% better shape and more complete.

Also take into account that you do still live at home and for the most part have to follow their rules. Your father might be somewhat concerned for your safety by modding turbo DSMs to go faster. I don't know your situation at home, but like everyone else said, enjoy your relationship as much as you can, and learn as much as possible.

I haven't spoke to my dad in over 3 years now. About the only good memories I have with him was working on cars, and when he introduced me to the world of turbos with his 91 Dodge Spirit R/T. I miss that car.

I understand what your saying but like I mentioned above, I can't really get into why I don't have much respect for my dad. Especially since when this car things comes up, he's just consirned about money, his money (pardon me). The other reasons are pretty far off topic... Sure it would be cool to get 'Link and screw around with it, but I think the grand scheme of it would scare him as well.

That was a point I said to my dad. Finding cleans DSMs is hard. ESPECIALLY a 1g!

Well since everyone doesn't seem to know the situation (I don't expect any of you to), I might as well explain it. I hope this doesn't get me b*tched at by a mod.

My dad does what he wants; he used to drink, and smoke. He used to drink way to much. Then once he got put in jail for punching at my mom through our screen door we had. He did it enough to leave a buise.

Once he got drunk and my mom pissed him off so we left and went to go sleep in my grandpa's wrecker at the body shop he now owns (my grandpa has since then died). After we were out calling people and looking for him, it was almost midnight. I honestly thought by then he had gone out and killed himself or something. But no, there he was, sleeping at "the shop" (as I call it), and a cop had to bring him home.

Then a few months later he LITERLY almost died in my parents room because he had a bleeding alsor. The funny thing was, my mom and sister were SUPPOSED to be gone that weekend. Luckily my sister for some reason got a swollen cheak from what we thought was an absess tooth. So my mom stayed home and ended up catching my dad as he passed out because of all the blood he had lost.

He ended up in the hospital for almost two weeks I think it was. And not too long after he started chewing tobacco and SLOWLY started back into drinking.. I think it has been about 3-5 years since, and he's been warned by my mom; if he starts the drinking again, he's gone or we're leaving. SO what has he started again? Drinking when my mom is out of town. For that and the name calling and such he does to my mom, myself, and my sister, I have no respect for him or anything he tells me..

My father when he was younger fixed up cars for demolition but he some how doesn't see why I'm into cars and want to build my DSM. I told him when I was looking for a DSM that I wanted to build it for road racing and when I eventually bought one he refuses to see the "point" of it and I keep saying "Why did you race demo?" End of conversation.

He grew up with Mustangs, Cougers etc. He doesn't see why I want to build an "Import" and not a mustang or something. He knows I can't aford insurance for any V8 powered sports cars. Also his version of restoring or building is pulling out a check book and letting someone else do the work and doesn't see why I want to learn everything and do everything. My Dad and I can't really talk car due to he isn't into them other than "Look at that Zepher!" My Dad is constanly saying how worthless my car is and I'm loving the support from him. He gives me a had time when I'm ordering parts (Everything is with MY money) I just ignore him but some of you will say. "Why don't you go to your mothers?" Well... She and I don't get along at all and we don't speek much at all.

So your better off than I am, but I say build the 1G and just say that you are more into the performance of the car not just the looks. He will eventually see the good work your doing to the motor n stuff and probly will have a change of heart.

Edit: I was typeing when you wrote above, well you have the same relationship as I have with my mother. Ok your not better off than I but I suggest continue to do what your doing and work on your car dispite what your Father is saying.

I say go with the gst because it is 5 speed like you want and turbo it doesnt need to much work.Possibly a transmission rebuild and fixing the common 2g strut tower rust.The other two need a lot of work.

I say go with the gst because it is 5 speed like you want and turbo it doesnt need to much work.Possibly a transmission rebuild and fixing the common 2g strut tower rust.The other two need a lot of work.

The GS-T is a manual, but so will the '91 TSi. And the '95 TSi isn't in that bad of condition. Its needs a bit of work, but not as much as the 1g... As far as I am consirned, I am putting a hold on the 1g and selling the factory parts I'm not using and seeing how much money I can make from that. Then I will go from there. Regaurdless I'm going to build a monster 7-bolt longblock and do something with it...

Enjoy the time with your dad, but at the end of the day HE bought the cars and theyre HiS. I tried doing this with my dad and it didnt work out at all "i was 16" so i saved up my cash from small part time jobs and had $500 and bought my 1st DSM. a Black 95 Tsi Awd 5speed with Blown trans, fixed it my self With little money i saved up and by reading the Threads here on TUNERS. and 13 dsm's, 2 B13 ser's ,1 DC2 integra & 1 silverado truck Later i still havent let him touch my cars . So point being , stick to your 1g talon and do whatever the hell you want because its YOUR CAR, your money " if u at least have somesort of job".. Start of with baby steps , dont try to jump on a "BIG TURBO SETUP" when the most experience of power you got is from a t25.

Yeah be thankful your dad is into imports. My dad has helped me work on my car plenty of times but he loves saying its a little washing machine motor.
He thinks if its not a V8 its not fast, but hes slowly gaining respect for the 4g63!
But if I were you I would fix up the 2g awd, because from my personal experience 400whp in fwd is no fun at all.
