2G Do i have the right axle seal, and how far does it need to go into the transmission?

The first pic is the seal that is in my transmission right now (passenger side, 2g awd manual tranny).
It has been in there since I bought the car and I want to put a new OEM one in while I'm swapping out my clutch.

Is that just some off brand, non-oem seal that's in there, or is that how it's supposed to look?

I bought a new oem passenger side awd axle seal (part number MD707184) from a dealership, but it says "oil seal, diff case" on it. Does it look like i got the right one?

It also says "oil seal t/m" on the packaging. Is there any chance that this seal is for a different mitsubishi vehicle? I wasn't able to give them a vin number because I have a Talon.

I just want to make sure i have the right seal before i go tearing the old one out. Looks like it has rtv around it and I bet it's going to suck trying to get it out.

The one in the trans looks like some kind of aftermarket type seal. The oem seals for these look just like the new one that you got.

You have the right seal. From your pic, it is pretty clear someone was not very careful replacing the aftermarket one you have there by all the score marks around it. I have had good luck removing old ones by carefully driving a drywall screw through the face (there is/should be metal under the rubber). It will give you some leverage to pull it out. This is only if you do not have room for a seal puller. Use your new seal as a guide to see how deep you can drive the screw (and mark with tape) before attempting.

Thanks, I was able to get it out easily with a prybar. I was wrong about there being rtv on it, it was just gunk/road grime built up around the seal. I had to use a file and 400grit sandpaper to fix the surface that the seal sits on.

Does anyone know 100% for sure how deep this passenger side axle seal is supposed to go into the transmission?

Do I push it in up to #2, or do it push it in all the way so that #1 is flush with the outside?

The lip that the seal sits on is exactly the same width as the innermost part of the seal up to the #2 edge, which leads me to think that the "cup" on the outside of the seal is going to be sticking out of the tranny a little bit, but that lip is really going to build up gunk on it so I'm not sure if that's the way to do it. I've skimmed through a billion different threads and I can't find a definite answer

Anybody know for sure how deep to install that seal? I'm about to install the transmission into the car and I won't have as much room to mess with it afterwards.

I have the seal in the transmission up to #2 in the pic above, should I leave it like that or push it in more until #1 is flush with the outside of the transmission?

While installing that seal, its not suppose to be flush with the case. I made the mistake when installing it flush and it cause a massive leak. I forgot how much its suppose to be out but 3/8 out should be ok.

I just replaced my passenger side seal 3 times in a week, pushes in by hand easily for some reason, with OEM seals. Even tried a NAPA seal (SKF), which slid in even easier. Leaked every time. I used Ultra Black RTV around the perimeter and finally got the OEM one to seal.
