the axle that is connected to the actual wheel is that the cv axle or halfshaft. i always knew them as cv axles. i have a 92 tsi and its for the left rearend
 
6 one, half dozen the other.

most people call them half shafts. or just axels.
the "cv" part normaly refers to the joint. (constant velocity joint )

I dont know what the question is but I know I just had fun with this :mad: The CV shaft on my 90 awd turbo is connected to the wheel then goes to the half shaft OR another name for it is intermediate shaft then that goes to the tranny... heres a pic that could help you :)

the one that goes into the trans is a half shaft, the other is a cv axle. i went around and around with that because when i got my car it didn't have the jackshaft.
 
i needed to know this because i have to replace it.
also when i buy it i need to know whether my car is limited slip or locked.
How CAN I TELL HELP !!!!!
