Could someone explain how a crank trigger works and how it mates to a 7 bolt but a 6bolt doesn't use one?

Here is the issue. I have a 6bolt with a 2g head that I fried and I bought a 6bolt block (checked) with a 1G head from a local shop. I'm having them swap all of my parts from my old block and my head to the new block.

So I'm fairly illiterate when it comes to the actual engine. The shop is having an issue with the crank trigger and I'm not sure why. If they moved my head to the new block and all of my timing components, what is the issue? What part on my old 6bolt block allows me to run a crank trigger that my new block doesn't have? I'm a little worried about this shop not understanding the tolerances of this engine. They specialize on small block V8s but had this in the back from a previous customer who left it when he ran out of money.

Any help with understanding this would be great before I go in to talk to the shop and tell them what needs to be done.

So Kiggly has a 6bolt crank trigger to replace the CAS issues that many people with a 6bolt have. I found a picture and maybe that will help my mechanic. If not, I may just purchase the part from Kiggly (gotta love his stuff) and use that instead. Any opinions?

You don't even need that sensor now to be honest. They make a swap harness for a 6-bolt in a 2g. the cam gear and crank sensor are wired to go to a 1g style CAS mounted by the throttle body.

Here is the wiring diagram for it if you choose to go and do a hard wire setup for it. The swap harness is for plug and play apps that allow you to revert back to a stock setup with no problems or extra work.

Much appreciated. I think between the kiggly information and the RRE information you posted, I know enough now to talk to the mechanic. I'm getting worried about him. I think I'll try and leave work early today and have some face to face time.

I took a look at the issue on Friday when I got home early and it appears that my old block is an NA 6 bolt (no oil squirters) and the new block I'm buying and adding my head to is a turbo 6 bolt (oil squirters). Whatever they hodged podged together for my engine is not standard for DSM builds and does not support my existing crank trigger. Now the longblock I'm buying does have a Green top CAS. My choices are either:

1. Finish the build with my 2G head and install the green top CAS.

or

2. Buy a 6 bolt Crank Trigger Sensor from Kiggly and it'll just plug in.

How much of a PITA is it to get a green top CAS to work properly with a 6 bolt and 2g head or would it be better to go with the Kiggly plug and play crank sensor? I'd like some opinions before I give Kiggly a call to see what the benefits or their part is over what I have.

The block don't matter if its a turbo or non turbo block. The only difference is that the turbo has the squirter's and the non turbo doesn't.

To put a 2g head on the 6-bolt block you will need to make the head bolt holes larger to match the bigger 1g head bolts.

I would find a black top CAS and the wire connector for cheaper than what you will pay for that kiggly setup your talking about and save from having to carefully modify a 2g head to fit a 1g block. But thats just me and my opinion of what I would do.

You can run the 2g head but its gonna be a PITA when and if that crank sensor goes bad or needs adjusting. The 1g CAS is sooooo much easer to set timing and everything with if its in need of adjusting.

My current block would require machining and the new block already has high compression pistons installed and ready to go. I'd rather have the new block with oil squirters than keep my old block, bore it out .02 over, and hone the cylinders.

To put a 2g head on the 6-bolt block you will need to make the head bolt holes larger to match the bigger 1g head bolts.

My 2G head is already machined for a 6 bolt block. I even had them widen the oil channel for better flow.

So you think a black top is the much better choice than going with a Kiggly? I know a black top usually goes for about $50.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll start my research on the CAS.
