Clicking near cv axle

I have a loud clicking noise coming from what appears to be my pass. cv axle. I bought a new one, but tripod part of the axle that goes into my transmission doesnt come out of my transmission. I unsealed it and just booted over the current tripod. Nothing was fixed. It still does it. Any ideas?

The clicking is the axleshaft. It will come out of the transmission. Use a pry bar and a hammer. There should be groves on the joint were you can put the pry bar and hit it with a hammer. Otherwise just pry between the transmission and axle.

and its safe to just beat it out? I was afraid i was going to drain my tranny fluid and find metal shavings in there. Ill try to knock that out either today or tomorrow and let you know. If i cant get it out are their any other ideas?

They come out fairly easy and yes you will lose tranny fluid.

alright, so i knocked out that joint put the new one in and it did nothing. Still making the clicking noise. Any other ideas? I really hope its not my tranny. Is it possible that i chipped a tooth off a gear or something and the metal is getting knocked around in the tranny?

maybe you have a nail/bolt/rock in the tire.

it does it with both tires off the front end. I jacked it up and took the tire off to see if it was in my brakes or something. Its loud too... and not a consistent click.

if its a rotational noise it is very possible that the center diff on the tranny is bad. My buddies awd blew the center diff and it sounded like a helicoptor goin down the road. We ended up not being able to pull one of the axles out because it was completely seized up in the center diff.

but its not AWD, but in chance the front diff, as fwd's have, all i would do is get the front up on jack stands remove the wheels and put the car in gear and let the clutch out on the jack stands and look/hear were it could be coming from with the wheels spinning.

Thats what i did and its coming from the passenger cv joint. Possible the front dif. The transmission only has about 60k miles on it, i dont drive it too hard, i hope thats not what it is. I can rebuild a motor in a weekend. If i had to build a tranny i dont know what id do, ive never done that.

does it seem to speed up and slow down as you do? or is it a consistant noise at the same clicks per sec sound? Same everytime? While turning or driving straight? has it seemed to get any worse from when it started?

First get that cv out of the tranny, just pulled mine this past weekend, I used a large screw driver and a hammer, hit it upward into the joint at an angle and spread apart the tranny from the axel. Generally when the cv goes out you will know it forsure, and mainly when your take a sharp turn. (ex. pulling away from the curb at lower speeds etc.)

if you have found this is not the problem, check the wheel bearings. sometimes those go out and make a noise like your tire is going to fall off or something. it would be the bearing going out and making a dragging type noise. mostly with mine it was about 45mph and above for some reason.

your tranny could also be the problem, does it always do this in every gear? every speed? all the time?

Ugh I had that problem in my Civic. Its the most annoying sound in the world. If that's your case, get it replaced asap. If it seizes on you, you won't be having a good day.

It stays the same no matter what speed im going. Every day same noise. I already pulled my cv boot, installed a new one and nothing changed. Its coming from near the inner joint, transmission area, so i dont think its wheel bearings. It makes the noise if i go straight, turn, backwards, probably even side to side. Its really annoying. And yes it does it in every gear, at every speed, all the time.

ok im having a similiar problem check all your suspension bushing lower control arm straight and curved what happens is the bushing is so gone it slides back and forth and u get a knocking sound.

Have you drained the tranny or checked the fluid yet? Take a look and see if there are any metal shavings in the fluid.

I havent drained the fluid. I know i need to i just need to grow up and buy it. It cost $23 a qt and it takes a little over 2 qts...

23 bucks a quart? What type of fluid you puttin in there son? Liquid Gold? Shouldn't cost you that much for tranny fluid. For manual trannys its only like 17 bucks max for good stuff.

hey bro i have a 420a 5 speed manual and i was told the same thing but i did some research if you live in warm weather put 75- 90 i did and my trans runs great

yeah, i live in denver so it gets pretty cold here. Im using royal purple syncromesh, and love it. My noise went away but found out more information. When im idling my clutch stays a little engaged... i think. I makes a grinding noise and when i press my clutch pedal it goes away.
