I thought it would be a good idea to drop the oil pan and fix a couple of small leaks while my power steering system and suspension are out of the car for service.

I found the debris shown in the pictures attached inside of my oil pan. After reading a few threads it sounds like the big brown material are turbo bearing fragments likely from a blown turbo. Sounds like this isn’t a concern for the engine, especially since it was running fine before dropping the pan. Turbo seemed to be working fine as well. There are also some RTV chunks which don’t sound concerning.
However, I am concerned with the silver metal chunks being spun rod bearing material. Please note that these pieces are NOT magnetic. There was also a small amount of silver glitter in the oil left over at the bottom of the pan shown in the picture. Never saw glitter in any of my oil changes before. No knock or low oil pressure that I’ve noticed.

Can you guys please help confirming that the brown material are turbo bits and let me know your thoughts on the grey metal chunks?
Does anything jump out at anyone from the pictures of the bottom end?

The large copper piece is a turbo thrust bearing and perhaps the grey/silver-ish metal chunks may be smashed thrust collar or so from the same blown turbo, the RTV may have been used at the turbo drain tube flange (Maybe that's why it got blown?).
This sometimes happens that some broken pieces from previous blown turbo appear at oil change especially if you have the stock oil return tube and didn't clean very well after blew the turbo. Those broken pieces were stuck at the drain tube bellows and it would come down to oil pan by time and you would find them later.
If you don't see any symptom of spun bearings or blown turbo then I wouldn't be worried too much.

I only found these pieces after o dropped the oil pan. Never saw anything out of the ordinary in the 3 oil changes I’ve done since owning the car. These oil return line from the turbo was also modified, cut into two pieces with an oil hose in between. My guess is that these pieces were at the bottom of the pan for a while.

Did you take the oil filter off? I’d be curious to see what the paper element looks like if you cut it open. If it’s silverish glittery sludge I’d maybe dig deeper.

Good call, I will cut it open and take a look. Again I never saw any glitter in my oil changes before but it’s worth a look.

I also checked for play on all connecting rods. They all feel solid. I think you guys are right, I’m not seeing any symptoms of failures so I am going to put it back together and get this DSM back on the road if the oil filter looks good.

Thanks for the help guys!
