I did do a some research and I didn't exactly find the information I was looking for.

Ok, soo I bought a 92 talon tsi off my father. Great running/looking car and I plan on modding it real soon(as everything is stock). I've had the car for a couple days, and what bothers me is the stock intake. It's horrible...and I would like to change it out but I don't know exactly what steps I would need to take to do so. My friend suggested I convert to a 2g intake in wich he continued to say he didn't know if it was do-able. So my question is, what should I do, and what can I do about the intake?

Very nooby question I know, but I really don't know.

All help is highly appreciated.

Thanks.

It is possible to put a 2g intake, but you need an sfac to adjust your fuel. If you just slap it on you will run lean. You also need the 1g to 2g adapter wire,or you can make one. They do have intake pipes for the 1g but yeah you are better off with a 2g intake, maf, and the 2g to 1g adapter. But you can't put it on unless you have an safc or link,or something to tune with

if you are talking about the intake manifold itself, the only real options are Evo3 intake manifolds, or sheet metal intake manifolds, which arent recommended on nearly stock DSMs, why not shave and powdercoat it?

Welcome to the world of DSMs!

You wanna start with a build plan. What are you power goals? What is your budget? Are you doing the work yourself? etc

The 1g stock intakes are garbage. The piping is restrictive and can restrict air flow. Good idea on replacing it asap.

Now when you are choosing a new intake for you turbo, you need to keep a couple of things in mind. Many of us on DSMtuners, utilize the mitsubishi factory setting of recirculating the vented air from the BOV (or bypass valve) back int the intake. The reason for this is that we run MAS systems that calculate air before it enters the turbo. This will require you intake to have a recirculation tube.

Some people run Speed Denisty or the GM MAF, this will allow you to vent your BOV to atmosphere because these tuning methods do not calculate air before it enters the turbo inlet.

If you plan on running a 2g mas, note the difference in inlet size. The 2g uses a 4inch diameter inlet, while the 1g and 3g/Evo Mas utilize a 3.125 inch diameter (3 1/8 inches). You will need an adapter coupler, or you can purchase an intake for the 1g to 2g MAS. Look at the picture below to better understand the difference.

When switching to either the 2g MAS or the EVO mas you need an adapter harness(the MAS piftails are totally different bewtwen 1g 2g and 3g) and a way to compensate for the MAS, SAFC or ECMlink.

Check out these intakes (I am currently running the aluminum 1g to 3vo mas): DEJON | Powerhouse

Thanks alot fellas, I think I'm gonna stick with the stock intake as of right now. That is til it completely drives me nuts :banghead:...I'm looking into getting a bov and a boost controller right now :thumb:.

Again, thanks guys.

Check out the upgrade paths and follow them. They will yield you the best results if done in order. Tech Guide: 1G 4G63t Upgrades - DSMtuners

When you say "stock intake" I am assuming that you are referring to thin actual intake pipe from the air filter to the turbo. Is that what you are referring to? There is some confusion because when you just say "stock intake" you could also be referring to the charge piping (from the turbo to the throttle body) or even the intake manifold. Please clarify if you are still interested in an answer.

Yes, I am referring to the air filter to the turbo...and I am still interested in it yes.

Ok, very good. You will notice that step 1 on the upgrade path (after maintenance of course) is the air filter and hard intake pipe.

"A high-flow K&N (or similar) intake filter will help throttle response and help all future mods achieve maximum performance. A hard intake pipe will also improve air flow over the factory rubber snorkel. This, along with the MAS modifications should take care of your intake needs at this stage."

You can check out the Dejon link that agentorange posted above, they make very nice DSM intake pipes. You can also check out ebay, an intake pipe is vey simple and you shouldn't spend a lot of money. Also don't get caught up in the "bigger is always better" mentality. A 4" intake pipe dropping down you your 2" inlet 14b will only hurt your flow.

A 2g MAS flow about 20% more air then the stock 1g MAS. This is good if you can get more fuel (High flow fuel pump and ~550 injectors) but for where you are at now (and assuming you are on a budget like most of us) I would stick with the 1g MAS, a cheap 1g intake pipe, and a K&N drop in air filter, and a hacked intake can.

Hope this helps! If you have anymore questions ask away! :thumb:

EDIT - This pipe is $38 shipped from ebay. Just toss that filter in the trash or sell it to a friend. You are going to want to keep the stock MAS. Here is the drop in K&N filter for $45 bucks from MAP. So there your complete air intake: the filter, hard pipe, and just cut the can open, for less then $100 bucks.

You can also shop around. Almost all of our venders here sell that same K&N filter and also Summit Racing and even parts store like Auto Zone. Also shop around for the intake pipe. All you need is the pipe and 2 couplings/clamps.

Welcome fellow Indy DSM'r!!! The 2G MAS change does take a little work (not to mention bigger injectors). Also note, you will need a non-stock filter for it. I had to order a short (4-5") K&N with a 4.5" opening for it to fit in the 1GB, as the 2G hard intake took up some space. Plus, I do not believe you can run the 2gMAS/intake with the stock SMIC, as the filter will rest where the SMIC piping is.
