Howdy guys. Ive been having some trouble with my 91 and I just cant seem to pinpoint what the problem might be. The car wont even start unless I unhook the intake from the throttle elbow and if i hook it up it just runs rough and eventually quits. Even though the turbo is pushing air. I was thinking it was maybe lack of fuel but theres a really gassy smell whenever the intake is hooked up. Any of you have this problem or now what it might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks ahead of time.

Is you MAF good?

Try running the car with the intake hooked up and while running, unplug you MAF sensor on the intake and see if the car changes at idle at all.

I thinking maybe the IC was maybe plugged or something so I wanted to see if there was any air at all being pushed through when it was cranked and it just kind of fired up. Ran really rough at idle though.

Are you throwing any CELS?(check engine lights) If so, check/have them checked and it should lead you in a projected path.

I cant have them checked. No garage within 50 miles of me has an obd1 scanner anymore. Ive been to every autozone and garage I can think of and nothing. Not even the dealerships have any.

I never knew that, I will have to try that out tomorrow. Never even heard of that kind of code reading. Thanks a lot guys. This should make my day a little easier.

went out this morning and there was no code. it would start up and idle surge from abou 900 to 1200 and then it warm up and idle at around 800 but it sounds like its missing a lot but no cel pops up

I would start with the basics if I were you which would be basic tune up. Spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc. Depending on how long it has been since any of that has been done.

Its been since last Wednesday. Plugs wires oil and coolant all replaced. Everything except fuel filter.
