My friend who is a mechanic (not too familiar with dsm motors) changed my timing belt for me because the belt slipped and my car stalled. I lucked out, no valve damage :) ( I was at idle) Now I have some vibration (pretty bad) when I reach 3000 RPM. Can anybody please point me in the right direction as to where to start investigating the cause of the vibration? Thanks.

Your rear balance shaft is out of phase. Line everything up to TDC, take the timing belt back off, and rotate the oil pump another 360*.

This is probably a stupid question but what does TDC mean? I will be relaying this message to an actual mechanic (aka no myself) ROFL

Out of phase meaning it should be removed ?

nevermind my dumba*s question I just re read the vfaq

NOTE: Crankshaft may need to be rotated up to six turns before all sprockets are properly aligned and the rear balance shaft is in phase, due to the oil pump-to balance shaft gear ratio.

Thanks for the help.

One more question!!! Will I hurt the car by driving it like this for a couple days until I can get it to the mechanic to get it fixed?

I wouldn't drive it - all those vibrations could jar something loose or do worse. If I DID drive it, I'd keep it under the 3k mark, since that's where it starts vibrating badly.

Most people agree that no real damage will result. I drove mine for over a year that way.

I think you mean rotate it 180*. If you rotate something 360*, it's in the exact same position as when you started, which wouldn't make his problem go away.

2:1 balance shaft to oil pump. The drive sprocket will go 360°. Mine was out-of-phase by the dealer.

I had the exact same thing happen to me when I got my timing belt changed right before I went on a trip to Oklahoma. I had no choice but to go ahead and drive it the way it was, then take it back to them to get it fixed. I had no problems with it on the trip. I think that you should be fine until your friend can get it fixed.

Good luck!

there is a bolt in the back of the block. if you remove tis and can stick a screwdriver all the way in your in phase if not rotate until you can. simplest way to check it.

Gravity during install is the simplest way, but the rod-thru-the-hole might be the most positive.
