i didn't know what to search for, so my question is how do you get the cel to flash a code on a 98 eclipse gs, i know you have to turn the ignition on off, ect , but i dont really know all the steps, thanks for any help
im in school now, so sorry if it is hard to understand :toobad:

the engine has to be doing something improper in order to throw a code. If there are no lights on it will be hard to find out what it wrong with the car. The blackbox in a car records the light and saves the code it gives. if no light, no code.

Your car can throw codes without throwing the CEL or any other light for that matter. My 2g used to throw codes all of the time but never got a light. If you think it threw a code or something is a miss then take it to a garage and ask them to hook a scan tool up to it. Around here they usually charge $10.00 to check it. All they do is hook it into your OBDII port and away it goes. Doesn't take more than 5 minutes and they will be able to tell you what, if anything is wrong with you car. Are you trying to throw a CEL or do you think something is wrong and think it should be on?

sorry i just got back from school, what i mean is cant you turn the key like on off on off and the self diagnostic will flash the code through the cell?

Nope. Gotta look it up with scantool or datalogger, logger will give you the number usually and you can cross it to see the problem. Nothing like what you are talking about though. I know for late model GM's if you cycle the ignition and press the gas pedal down it gets rid of that annoying change oil light. But that's irrelevant to this post.

yes you can, you turn the key on off on off on, without starting the engine of course, and the light will blink 1, then pause, the 2 blinks to tell you it is working, then it will start blinking again, anywhere from 1-5 blinks, a pause again, then anywhere from another 1-5 blinks, example 32, 3 quick blinks a pause then 2 quick blinks. after it is done giving you the codes, it will blink 55 to tell you it is done reading codes :thumb:

very true, did it all the time on my old 420a, doesnt work on 4g63 though. The guy who said that you cant do it above must have been mistaken.

i feel retarded, i try turning it on, then allway off, on,then allway off, on, A. off, on and i get nothing? am i doing it wrong, please help me

My bad I didn't pay much attention to your vehicle being a 2g n/t...it's still news to me though.

are you actually cranking the car, then turnin it off??? if so, thats a no no. you also must do the "on off on off on" within 5 seconds for it to work

i am not turning it off, am i supposed to turn it on (not runing), then just to accesory, or all they way off where i could take the key out?

i havent done it in a while, but i think its all the way on b4 cranking it, then all the way off, etc...try it and lemme know

Put the key in..Now, turn it forward one click, back one click, forward one, back one, Forward one and LEAVE IT. Wait for flashes...If nothing, maybe your bulb burned out or was disconnected or something by a previous owner, to hide any problems before selling it. Does the check engine light illuminate for a few seconds after turning the car on?

auctually the previous owner was, my brother, so not a lemon or anything, but yes it illuminates when i turn it on for like 2-3 seconds. maybe i'll by a reader
