The issues and their solutions have remained the same- either you don't have enough cool air reaching the rad, there's a cooling system obstruction which is preventing coolant from circulating, or your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to be consumed or pushed away from the engine.

I just left my house to go over to my GF's,and happen to look down and see my needle right before the red mark. This just happened out of nowhere. I stop the car as quickly as i can, and pour in some coolant(Coolant a little low). Still same thing. Welp im in the middle of the road, and HAD to get it home. Im only 5 min from my house. I decided to try and make it(I really had no other choice). Welp I drive no faster than 20mph, and the temp needle is BARELY into the red the whole way.And occasionaly to the left of it. Am I ok?? Do ya think any damage was done?? And im thinking either thermostat, or water pump. For each of those, whats a round about $$ figure to get replaced?? Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have pretty much the exact same problem with mine. I just bought the car about a week ago and the guy told me it overheated if you go anywhere over 65. He said he had just replaced the thermostat but didn't know much about cooling systems and didn't go much further. I checked it out on the ride home from buying it and as soon as I passed 65 the temp gauge started rising quick. I got it home and let it cool down overnight. I started with checking the thermostat only to find that he had lied to me about replacing it, the only thing in the thermo housing was the top disc of the thermo that the spring and everything attaches to. I dug around in the car and found a brand new thermo in the box. I replaced it and it helped for a while, but now it started overheating again at about 70 mph. Motor has about 50k on it and coolant is full. Both the fans run good and it cools down if I let it idle. Ran a garden hose through radiator with both hoses disconnected and refilled it with new coolant and still no difference. Going to replace rad. cap tomorrow possibly. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Pull a compression check w/ the car hot. Might have a slightly cracked head.

Check the condition of the radiator hoses, put on a new radiator cap, but fear a disintegrating plastic water pump impeller.
You're due for a timing belt job anyway.

10 years of buildup inside, try mixing a water and baking soda mix and let it run through the system for a few minutes then drain and refill.

It has always worked for me in the past.

Try flushing your radiator. I've seen cars that only heat up on the interstate do to a clogged radiator.+1 on the other suggestions

Alright, just put a new radiator cap on today. On the suggestion of the water and baking soda mix, do I completely fill the system with this mix or just a small portion with the coolant/water mix that already occupies it? I will get back to you guys on what I find out if the cap helped, its really rainy today and I don't have a lot of tread left on the tires, the highways around here don't drain water well anyways . What my ride did from a long, 400 mi. trip: Less than a mile to my home exit and the motor suddenly boiled out most of the coolant into the overflow bottle. I immediatey shut down the motor to coast to the side and sit for a while. Then, I managed managed to crawl to a gas station at the exit and put water back in so I get my ride home.

Took the radiator out and did a garden hose flush where I blew out so much rust and junk out of the radiator. Took the T-stat out to flush the block with the heat control open to flush out the heater core as well.

..and did buy a new cap. Old one had weakened up some. Just hope that I didn't pop a HG with this sudden rise of temp since I was travelling 70 on the freeway and was off the boost.

still heating , I have done it all twice over everything new ,could the block be cracked ,if I don,t soon figure this out this car is going for sale or maybe a huge fire ,getting very anoying and costly .my 91 laser is the same car and it only runs at 160f but this talon runs at 220f which is very hot

Did u change your water pump ? Thermostat? Maybe that could be your problem

I changed everything all coolant system components ,getting very sick of putting head gaskets in .I think i,m just going back to stock block and run the piss out of my 20g ,lets see what happens .. maybe the toyota supra is in the very near future .

Alright the new radiator cap didn't help. I think i might go ahead and put a water pump on it, I'm not sure if that is it but I need a new timing belt anyways and a new pump from the local napa is like 50 bucks. If that doesn't fix it I will take my radiator out and take it to the local radiator repair shop to get it rodded out. Unless someone has a place I can find a cheap aftermarket aluminum radiator ### with the plans I have for this car I will probably need one later on anyways. I took all the spark plugs out and looked down the hole with a flashlight to see if the pistons were clean, indicative of a blown HG. They all had a minimal amount of carbon on them so I don't think a HG is my problem. Thanks for all the help guys if anyone has any other ideas I will still check this thread, thanks.

had the car out for a ride about and hour ago and it didn,t overheat ,but it is only 20c outside .I pulled my air filter from my turbo and it seems to run better ,it,s not choking for air , I came to the conclusion that my slim fans can,t be giving the engine enough of air .so I guess I will have to make a type of induction for more air flow underneath the car

Yea, yank the radiator out and give it a good flushing out by shooting water in the bottom hose connection. You'd be amazed all of the rust and sludge that can be in the bottom.

And, while it's off, take out the T-stat, open up the heat control and shove a water hose in the lower hose and flush out your block.

If your A/C condensor is still in place, power wash through the fin area, or if no A/C completely remove the condensor.

Then, get a new cap.

Have you checked you thermostat to see if it is stuck "open or closed"? A way to check is take it out and boil it in water on the stove. If it opens after about 5 min or so it should be ok. If it doesnt open at all, it needs to be replaced.

I experienced basically the same problem when I was coming home from a 400 mi drive on the freeway: I suddenly overheated when the coolant boiled out into the overflow bottle. After a sudden shutdown and sat on the side of the freeway for a few, I got the thing going and took it easy to the next exit to a gas station to refill my system since I could easilly take the cap off due to loss of pressure. (I did a belt and pump changeout 4 months ago...)

It settled down to where I got home okey with the thing. Next day, I took the radiator out and gave it a very healthy flush with a pressure hose where I did have tons of rust and gunk, sprayed out the fins and took out the condensor since my AC is kaput anywhos. Then, I opened up the heater control in the cab, took out the T-stat and shot the water pressure in the lower hose to flush out the block (have to give that baking soda trick a try when I get things back together...)

..and bought a new cap. Just hope that I didn't toast a HG when this thing boiled over on me.

I've just sold my car but I'm having the same issues as before. I thought I would have solved them by now.

After installing my new huge front mount, the car began to overheat. Yes I've read all the threads with a similar situation. Please help me out if you can.

Now it could very well be a coincidence and something else is causing her to heat up, yet doubtful. My immediate thought is that the airflow was being blocked, as that is the main change that was done.

After everything I've tried, perhaps a minimal effect has been achieved, she still overheats. I've tested only in my neighborhood 0-30mph.

- I've added a flat piece underneath to pull some air behind and up
- I've ran with the heat on
- (my ac belt is off) I turn on the AC to have both fans running, no change
- I've added a bottle of water wetter
- I've taken out a good amount and diluted to around 80/20 water to antifreeze
- I've removed the upper bumper bracket, and left the hood unclosed yet resting on a foam shroud I made around the radiator. A full inch to draw in from the top, I thought this would work for sure, no change.
- Blown every inch of the radiator and fmic with an air compressor


Any suggestions on what I could do within the next day to get her to run cooler?? I could really do anything, its only going to be temporary. Would getting a radiator flush tomorrow really make a major difference??

I don't believe the issue is with the thermostat, yet I don't really know. I'm going right now to get a 2nd bottle of water wetter as well as a new radiator cap. (there is indeed a slight leak from the cap)

I explained in the ad when I was selling that it has an issue with overheating, yet that I would look at it and possibly have it solved. Originally the car was going to be shipped door to door. The buyer is going to mess with it when he gets it to his house, she needs to drive roughly 1 hour away though. I'm lost at what to do and freaking out since I only have about a day left to work on her before I leave for school again.

unless you have a failsafe (or similar thermostat) thermostat i wouldnt rule out the thermostat...why are you so sure its not?
