I have a blown big 16g sitting here I was going to rebuild, and I see the turbine blades are all chewed up. Can I use the turbine wheel/shaft out of a 14b to rebuild the 16g? The turbo will be sent out to be balanced after the rebuild.

ok, 2nd question. When I pulled the compressor housing off, I noticed this:

previous owner clocked the turbo and instead of just lightly grinding down the back plate for the alignment pin, looks like a whole chunk was ripped off. is it still safe to reuse this? What worries me is that the o-ring is clearly exposed here.

My 2nd option would be pulling the compressor wheel and housing and installing into my 14b (w/ a 16g rebuild kit).

All parts if the turbos are interchangable, but the back plate in the 14b id recommend being machined to fit the 16g compressor wheel where it sits, since it's smaller.

Most Big 16G's and Evo III 16G's I've seen were VSR-balanced from the factory....so if you swap either wheel or disassemble the turbo without marking wheel/nut/shaft orientation, you may want to get the assembly rebalanced. Not saying it wouldn't work otherwise, it would just be a much better idea to have it balanced if you don't want to screw with rebuilding it every 2,000 miles if you'd assemble it with the wheels out of orientation.

Many of the older 14B's and some larger turbos like the TD06/06H 20G's don't have balance grinds on the compressor locknut.

....but I don't want to turn this thread into another "should we balance" discussion as there are at least 100 of those on here already.

Expect a PM shortly on the balance discussion.
