I've done some searching and I know that you can control the fans on a 2g, but is there a way to make the fans on a 1g come on earlier by using ECMLink?

Thanks, Mike.

What kind of mods are you meaning?

My car ran at a steady 203 with a 195* thermostat but I put in a 180* to try and lower them a few degrees. It now sits at 186-190* when driving, but in traffic, it'll go back up to 203 when the fan kicks in. I would just like the fan to come on around 190 or so.

I'm in the same boat as you. Cruising i my temps are around 180-186 and then at idle it goes up to 203-206 because that's when the fans come on. The problem is that on the 1g's the ECU has no control over the fans. I bought a Derale adjustable fan controller and got it all set up and I could make the fans come on at a lower temp but they were supposed to turn off 10* lower then when they turn on but it was really like 25* lower and I didn't like it. I tried two different controllers and spoke with the manufacturer and couldn't get it resolved so I'm back to stock fan control now.

I have thought about it using the a/c button to turn on the fans, but I would prefer to have them automatically come on just for the peace of mind when driving in traffic and not having to be worried about what the temperature.

The other idea I had was using the FPS through Link, but none of the parameters include coolant temperature. That would be the ideal thing cause one could set it that they come on above this temperature and when throttle position is 100%.

Any thoughts?

You would have to build a connection from a digital output on the ECU (like one of the unused solenoids) to activate a relay that can then bypass the thermoswitch to ground activating the radiator fan. Then set up DSMLink to switch at the right temps.

I'd be willing to do that, but when I look under the tabs on Link for EGR and FPS activation, there is nothing that could be set for temperature. There's RPM, loadfactor, TPS, speed and knock, but no temperature.

Dont know if this helps you at all but what i did was run a wire from the fuse box to my console and put in a switch and ran the wire to my fans , so if i want them to come on i just flip a switch. Just dont forget to turn them on .

See, that's what I want to avoid. I don't want to be sitting in traffic, look down, and I'm at 220* cause I forgot to flip a switch! If a switch is the only thing I could do, I might have to that though...:(

I'm going to email Tom or Dave and see what they think of the idea.

The right way is to add an additional ground path for the fan relay. The stock setup puts the thermoswitch in the ground path for the relay so that it grounds the relay coil when the switch closes. You can set up multiple ways for it to get grounded and because it's the ground path it only need to carry the small current that the relay coil draws not the whole fan current.

I emailed Tom at ECMTuning and he said many people have requested the same thing I did, they just don't have the time to do it right now.

i bought my car 7 months ago..one of my fans is controlled by the thermostat..the other one i can turn it on by turning on the ac even though i have no ac..idk if thats weird..was just rewired that way.it does have bigger fans
