Im sure this has been asked before but i couldn't find an answer when i searched. Got a ebay 16g from a buddy for 20 bucks just because i wanted the 7cm housing for my 14b.Anyway im wondering if anyone has ever tried or successfully rebuilt one using a real MHI rebuild kit?Is it even possible(bearings different size ect.)?

I can't see how any one Chinese knockoff can be any more reliable than the next. They're most likely built by the same facility that builds all the others- unless CX Racing is rebalancing each turbo they sell, there's no way it can be any more durable than the next.

CX Racing and Punishment Racing are somehow related....Punishment used to sell a "Budget 16G", which they no longer offer. I'm sure there's a reason for that.

After DSM Graveyard gives away 10 or 15 of these turbos on warranty service, I'm sure they will disappear from their lineup as well.

Good point, figured that would be your reply. I figure once this ebay turbo pops I'll go with a HX35 seeing as they are around the same price.

Tear the turbo down and measure the shaft spec.

I'm away from the shop right now, but I'll post up the shaft specs between the TD05H and the T3 tonight.

measured the shaft and its .375 or 12/32

Ok well that caliper i got is just a cheap on from a hardware store so it might not be that accurate. So do you think its the older one since its closer to the MHI one you measured?

Both wheels have cuts like its been balanced, how good its been balanced who knows?

Hmm think im gunna see if someones got a digi caliper i could borrow to see if i get a different measurement.

Well aside from the rebuild questions i got the turbine housing on the 14b today. After porting my stock mani to match i can notice a reeal nice gain in the upper rpm's now. Defenatly a worthy mod.

I know this was old, but i just wanted to ad that their are now ebay "big shaft 16g" rebuild kits that rebuild ebay turbos

Every unit available on eBay is the t3 style. I have only seen a few left in rotation on eBay that are non t3 style, and those are typically around $500 and advertised as "real mhi 16g"

You can tell the difference in the face of the compressor housing. The t3 opening is much larger compared to a real 16g, which has the same size compressor housing as the 16g. (Only difference visible is the inlet diameter, where as the t3 style is much larger diameter opening and an aftermarket compressor cover

I purchased a cxracing 16g a year ago and started to smoke, and have a tdo5 rebuild kit on hand... so I need a purchase a t3 rebuild kit that has the t3 bearings to complete the rebuild right? Just doin this until next year I can buy a real 16 or fp turbos

I guess I'm somewhat interested in this. I bought my gsx with an ebay turbo. I'm not a fan of having it as every time I drive it, I feel I could blow it. However, for now I'm stuck with it and need to keep it healthy. How can I tell what ebay 16g version it is?

The Evo III GT turbos use all MHI-compatible parts, the eBay 16G's do not. You may be misleading lots of DSMers with this statement.

The only eBay mhi style turbo chargers had a huge evo III gt stamp on the compressor face. If yours is just a smooth polished face with no markings, no tdo5 markings on the cover, or only has a sketchy looking serial number on the square plate it's a cheap t3 style.

It's hard to describe unless you'e
Seen them side by side, but the t3 opening is larger proportionally to the face of the compressor. Making it look more like a 20g hybrid

And the old e3 gt eBay turbo. Btw this was when $500 for an eBay turbo seemed like a too good to be true deal. So unless you paid $500 for your eBay turbo it's a t3 style

Here's an mhi style eBay turbo.

I guess mine looks more like the T3 style one, but it doesn't have the engraved info on it, but rather a blue data plate instead. Also the inlet of mine, where the intake pipe clamps on, seems to be the same size as a standard T25 as it has the oem 2G accordion intake on it without being stretched or anything.

Yeah they are sold with that plate or engraving.

for the money the t3 internals are typically pretty durable at under 20psi.

My eBay t3/16g seemed to lag pretty hard compared to my t25 and 14b, otherwise no problems

Those clones were extremely prone to failure, in fact if you search back for reviews about the eBay 16g turbos most of the complaints and horror stories are about that original clone design. Where as the t3 design has been shown to actually be a decently reliable setup for an inexpensive turbocharger. (To note I make no mention of horse power gains or maximum boost levels.)
