Good Morning Everyone,

I have my engine mostly assembled and am now placing the kelford 272's into the head. My question is, is it normal for the lash or distance between some of the roller rockers and cam lobes to be different or should the distance be the same across all lobes.

This is my first engine build and I am just trying to be extra cautious. I am scared of putting the cam caps on and proceeding.

thanks for your help,

Kris

I'm not quite sure to what you're reffering too. But its normal to have to tighten the cams down equally from side to side so not to bind. You will be opening a couple valves while you're tightening the cams down into their saddles. Hope that makes sense and if not try and clarify what you're asking.

Bleed your lifters so you don't bend valves (like I did). Just a reminder.

I would say that it is "normal" on our platforms due to the fact that we all reuse head components like they don't wear out, however, on a normal flat tappet style head there is a specification that valve clearances regularly have to be shimmed to. The same theory stands with our heads, but we ASSUME because we have hydraulic lifters they compensate for variances between valves. I'm sure the fsm states some clearance between the rockers and lobes and I'm sure it does matter but nobody seems to care between reusing old parts and running re-grinds and using #10 washers under the lifters.

Thanks guys, I think NB4G63 best answered my question. I am basically at the part in Jafros Video where he sets zero lash on the solid adjustable lifters. my question referred to the space between the roller rocker and the cam lobes and whether that should differ, I assume it would as specific valves would be open at TDC for correct firing order. just looking for clarification.

thanks guys

Well I sure as hell don't do any of that. Do it right the first time and be done with it! Just adding a few tips/pointers from first hand experience that I wouldn't want anyone else to experience, especially since the OP said this is his first engine build, it never hurts to help out a fellow DSMer! :)
