Hey guys the name is ben and i am building an eagle talon tsi awd with a b/w gm-8 turbo off a 6.5 chevy disesl.

I was wondering if anyone has ever done something similar to my build? I was going to go the holset build, but everyone and there mother was talking about it, so i looked else where. I got a cheap one off a friend, and here i am almost done my project.

So the question is if anyone has ever ran these in a dsm? Or does anyone know what other turbo would be an equivalent?

The turbo's off the 6.5's are only good for 300-325 at best. Not a great turbo for the build in my opinion.

Is that a diesel HP rating? The hx35 is rated for only 280whp based on cummins. And the hx40 is rated for 350whp. Clearly that is not the case with a gasoline platform. . .

If we had the wheel dimensions, we can certainly ballpark the flow potential.

My IHI/Borg Warner RHC6 GM-1 has a 51mm inducer and a 70mm exducer on the compressor side. I was told the exhaust wheel was similar in size to a gt30 wheel. Both housings are .70a/r with the compressor being 3"inlet, 2.5" outlet and the turbine housing is undivided t3. I believe that all the gm series turbos are alike.

^+1 that is the size of mine, and yes most of the gm turbo's were similar..i think the only changes where the exhaust elbow

so what would this turbo be good for?

I'm trying to locate the map and wheel sizes. The guys who specialize in the 6.5's say that 625 cfm is max flow. IHI knew that GM would never need anything serious for a turbo because the 6.5 is high compression and also the fact that engine just can't handle any real power. I only comment on this because my grandfather has had one since 96' and researched a lot about the truck.

i've read that forum before..and it just doesn't make sense to me. This is a big turbo, the dude above said that it was similar to a gt30 which is a 450-500hp turbo.

should i even bother with this?

I was told the exhaust wheel was gt30 sized but dont quote me on that. I'd say run it and let us know how it goes. Mines going on a buddies built sohc non vtec 00 hatch :hellyeah:

625cfm is 46lb/min flow. That's 4-5lb/min more flow than an evo3 16g. easily 50whp more capable.

51mm inducer is about the size of an 18g. And an 18g has a 6blade inducer with about the same flow on it's compressor map. Dsmconvict, your h1c compressor flows about 48-49 lb/min, 2lb/min more than the GM BW compressor. The compressor cover can be deceiving. As well the BW compressors have been known to flow much more air than it's inducer diameter would typically suggest. Look at the s258 (58mm inducer) with it's compressor map that's every bit as far to the right as a gt35r 56trim (61mm inducer)compressor. At what boost is that 625cfm rating? MHI rates it's turbos at 15psi and the cfm rating is nowhere near what the compressors actually can do based on the map and results. There's alot more after 15psi:) .

Your h1c flows about 48 lb/min; about 5 lb/min more than the 57 trim (43lb/min at 60% efficiency). Still for a 50-trim flow territory either the h1c or BW gm turbo is a good choice.

Now the turbine wheel is a different story. which diameter of this BW turbine wheel is being compared to the size of the gt30 wheel? What are the aero characteristics, the difference in major and minor diameters. It takes alot of info to speculate on turbine flow. We also need to have the critical area of the turbine housing. For example the hx35 turbine wheel is about the size of the t350 turbine wheel, but you'll never get it to flow as much. It's designed to put efficiency first and flows enough for about a 60lb/min compressor with a decent turbine housing.

I agree. Run it, you're likely going to get 18g-20g results with it; in the relm of 50-trim flow.

The RHC6 compressor map is found on that mx6 thread. And it goes to about 18m^3/min at 25ish psi with common ambient conditions. This is about 635cfm or about 47lb/min :) about 2lb/min more than the 18g and 1lb/min less than a 54mm h1c. Not a bad turbo. Should definately be capable of this with the BW/IHI turbine housing.

Keep in mind that BW has stopped some of it's maps at 65% efficiency and even 70% efficiency (see the s258). So their rating could be based on 65% efficiency and the 20g and 50-trim both flow about 49lb/min at 60%. It's very possible that this turbo is right in the area of a 50-trim.

Borgwarner/ISHI RHC6 turbocharger.

Very high quality turbo featuring T3 compatible oil drain and turbine flange, polished Compressor housing, bigger shaft than equivalent garrett turbos, double compressor seal and sturdy internals such as bolted-Down 360deg. Thrust plate and an integrated backplate.

Compressor wheel: 50.3 / 70 mm 52 trim
compressor housing: 0.7 a/r

center section: oil cooled journal bearings

Turbine wheel: 64.6 /62.1 mm 77 trim
Turbine housing: 0.7 a/r

I'm now debating on using this on my car just to try it out. All I would need is a t3 manifold and custom o2 housing.

I'm not liking the wastegate recirculation of these turbos at all. Definately tack the flapper shut and run an external gate. I think you will get decent results for the effort. These turbos are plentiful. And don't have the "holset is secret high bang for your dollar turbo" hype. There's literally millions of +400whp turbos just sitting around collecting dust and rust. 20g and fp3052 turbos are so overpriced. If you don't have the balls to convert to a t3 setup, then you shouldn't be looking at building a +400whp dsm.

The plan was to tack the flapper shut. IF my 57trim, fp mani and PR o2 sell I'd like to get a cheap turbonetics style mani and run this if I dont fall into getting a .70 t3 housing for the holset

the flapper is welded shut..and i took that redic elbow off for the exhaust.

Theres 5 bolts that hold that cast elbow on and me and some buds made a plate and welded a 3inch 90 off of it for the downpipe

i'll get some pictures after work=]

oh and for the manifold i got a cast t3 drilled for a 38mm wastegate from slowboy

i think he said that he had one left

it was around 350 if i remember

i cant wait to drive this car again..its been since decemeber 20th since i blew the trans

yeah, i started it up and the turbo was blown...

I got another turbo from a friend...h1c..

i plan to have the b/w rebuilt..when i have some extra money.. i'd like to see what it is capable of
