Buy or not to buy

I really apologize for making a thread out of this garbage but I really need imput from some pros. I am looking at a 1998 Eclipse GS Non-Turbo 5 speed 420a engine. It has 92,000 miles completly stock, one owner, and is in IMMACULATE condition. It was a new car trade and it has no dents or dings nothing. This thing is like brand new and drives like a dream. Ive been doing alot of research but I have not bought it yet because I'm worried how reliable it will be. I realize there are headgasket issues with this engine. If I completly baby this thing and keep it all stock will it last me a long time with little repairs? I would really like some honest opinions here. Any imput is GREATLY appreciated.

Just like any other car. if you take care of it, it will last. Well unlike hondas, you could beat the piss out of it and then use that piss as oil and it would still last. But anyways, depending on the price and what you plan to use it for, sure it sounds good. But you havent given us much information about the car.

Yea I hear ya there . My buddy had an 88 civic dx and we put that poor little car through so much shit it would make Ken Block's Subaru look like a Sunday driver... Depending on the price you might be able to find a nice 2g 4g63T for the same price if not a little cheaper/more expensive. I'd go turbo if I were you just for the fun factor and there's always room for improvement with a 4g63T. 420a's are very reliable engines and can make high horse power on stock internals but the 4g63T is much more stout and reliable IMHO. Either engine is a very nice, well built engine and as long as you do the basic maintenance they will both suit your needs, whatever your needs might be.

Thanks for all the great input guys. If I buy the car it will be on tuesday and I will post a picture. It is a beautiful car, one owner its literally like brand new. Black with black interior. Everything is perfect. The transmission and clutch are so smooth. Engine is very smooth. How many miles do you guys think I could possibly get out of this car on original motor and tranny? I'm worried about having to repair this thing all the time. I need something reliable but I don't want a honda I've owned so many. The asking price for this vehicle is $3495.00

i was kidding actually reliable. just got to keep up good maint. and your pretty much good to go, but honestly wouldnt pay that much for that car. thats just me do what you think is best

yea, I'm just worried because it seems like there are a lot of coolant issues with the 420a motor.

every car has it problems no matter what. You dont plan on beating it or modding it so I think you should be fine. Can always take it to a mitsu mechanic and have them put it on the lift and inspect the car. Local dealership does for free for me since I know most of the people their.

i have the 420a Eclipse RS. i have had my car since 2002, ONLY coolant issue i have EVER had is that i replace the thermostat once a year. Besides that everything else is just normal maintenance. i've replaced upper and lower radiator hoses (which is nothing but 15 minutes out of your time to do at home). i have replaced the actual radiator... but that was my own fault for being young and stupid as hell. i was tweaking my car and i don't remember what happened but i got pissed and slammed my socket wrench down on it and cracked the cheap plastic on the top. i admit, it was my fault, i replaced it, good as if it never happened.
