A local used car dealer has a 2 tone red/black 1g fwd talon for sale. They are asking 2800. I think I can work him down, but Id like some opinions first.

It has some issues, motor mounts are shot, interior is horrid, it wants to stall when you let out the clutch or come to a stop, engine sounds good, but the stalling problem is worrying me. The trans grinded on me twice in first gear, but after it warmed up it was good.

The good, it has a recently upgraded td05 turbo, you can tell because its the only thing in the bay thats still clean. Greddy rs bov, 17" rims, nice paint, and a deep sporty exhaust. The car sounds good.

3 questions. What other than a vacuum leak can cause the stalling? Would the grinding in the trans go away with a better trans fluid? Redline or something? How much would you pay?

I wouldn't give anything over 1500 for that thing, its easy to find a cheap awd or a cheap 1g with decently clean interior.
The grinding, you will need new synchros most likely. The stalling is an easy FIAV/ISC/boost/vacuum leak fix.
It's at a dealership, go let them know the cars a pile and will take it off their hands for $1k cash.

I would keep looking, just my opinion. I would buy an AWD, but I also would not want to pay that much for that old of a car unless it was built with paperwork to prove it.

i agree try to find an awd one and 2800 for a 1 g fwd is pretty high especially the condition thats in

I got him down to 1300. He still pushing its a great car and cheap to fix. If he drops to 1000 Im going to take it.

It's funny how the dealer dropped the price by $1500. They always overprice their cars. He probably got it for little to nothing. $1300 is more like it. Got any pictures of this car?

I would never pay what he's asking. My buddy got a 1g Laser RS Turbo fwd for $1200 with no mechanical issues and under 90k miles. The only thing wrong with that one was the paint. I would just keep looking, there are better deals out there.

I agree with the guy above that is an awful big drop in price, it sounds like there is something up with the car and he wants to unload it, but that is just my opinion. I still would keep looking unless the car is what you want, but 1,300 and it needs work. I paid 800.00 for my 92 awd with 102k on the clock but it had bent valves:ohdamn: - easy fix.

I can't get a runnign dsm for under 1500 (minor problems mentioned above). And if it's in good sound mechanical condition, under 2K. I've sold n/t to turbo converts for over 2K that were complete (oil cooler ALL turbo components in the n/t except still had n/t tranny) and WELL running. I need to move. . . No I need a good running diesel flatbed and buy somewhere else and sell here.
