I'm new to the dsm scene, and I've found two local Talon AWD TSi's for sale. One is this one which is now $850 and he said in regards to the new issue that there is a loud ticking noise coming from the engine (help?). The other one is another '90 TSi that needs a new exhaust (turbo back) and a very good cleanup for $1000. I'm thinking about the first one in Enid, but I have no idea what would need to be done (maybe a head gasket?). Help and comments? Btw, I'm on a budget...

The ticking could just be lifters, fairly common. I'd take someone who's familiar with these cars to go with you to check it out. But that'd be a pretty good deal.

He just emailed me back. It also floods in that process. From what he's describing, it may be as simple as lifter tick or a bearing somewhere? Either way, he said it wasn't doing it until it overheated...

Haggle the other guy down to 800 and buy them both. You'll need a parts car and between the 2, you should have 1 good car. You can part out the misc items you don't need, make back most of your money and have 1 good running car with a frame you are donating to the junk yard.

Personally, I'd steer clear of the one in Enid simply because you have no idea how long it ran while overheating. If it happens that the head is warped, that can become an expensive fix.

Another way I am looking at it: why buy someone else's stripped, non-running problem when you can have, what you describe as, a basically problem free car that needs a little cleanup? Plus if the current owner says the block sounds horrible, what was already expensive with the head is doubly so now because of the block. And to be brutally honest, as a whole that guy's part list is nothing really impressive.

But if you do have the cash, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what bane3d suggested. Parts cars and extra parts in general are awesome to have.

OK represent!

The first one is proobably a rod or crank bearing. Engine needs rebuild and probably some new parts besides the bearings. The other one if all it needs is exhaust and a clean up would be your best bet. Also you say your on a budget well these cars love to eat through your budget and ten others so be forwarned that dsm's can get expensive because of the thirst for power.
