Ugh can't believe this happened. Drove the car about 1/4 mile this morning then it just stopped. I cranked it over once and didn't sound right so pushed it back to the garage. Took off the timing belt cover and this is what I find :banghead: Think I have bent valves? I will take the cam off and do a leak down test when I can but really don't want to pull the head

Wow, that really sucks man. If the cam gear loosened up while you were driving then there is a good chance you bent some valves.

Honestly? Probably. :(

Even if the cam gear fell off the camshaft as soon as the bolt broke and the timing belt un-tensioned itself the crankshaft was still spinning and the pistons most likely hit the valves while they were pushed down and bent them.

That's some really bad luck. Has anyone else ever seen a camshaft bolt just snap like that?

Honestly, you're just wasting your time doing a leak down test. When that bolt snapped your intake valves stopped, whatever intake valves were open got punched by the piston a few times.

I've never seen a bolt shear off like that but I have seen the intake cam gear bust and the diagnoses was what I described above... bent valves.

:( I figured as much. I might as well just grab a 1g head while I'm at it since I have a 1g tb and intake manifold chillin. I will just think this as a positive :)

Also since I have a 97 I can keep my cas correct?

Unless you sell it. ;) The CAS thats on the car now will work on the 6 bolt head if thats what you're asking?

Damn that sucks. No doubt you bent valves. Im going to guess it has something to do with the coolant that flows to the t-body, or the location of the 1g intake and t-body compared to the 2g intake. I got a 1g waterpipe if you need one.

Why would I need a 1g water pipe?

A 2G thermostat housing bolts up only to a 2G head whereas a 1G thermostat housing will bolt up to both a 1G and 2G head. By using the 1G head, you must use a 1G thermostat housing. A 2G water pipe connects the water pump to the 2G thermostat housing whereas a 1G water pipe connects the water pump directly to the lower radiator hose. If you kept the 2G water pipe, it would be out of position to accept the lower radiator hose. Of course it might be possible to modify the 2G pipe, but it seems like less of a headache to simply get the 1G pipe.

Yeah I have everything but that. Pm sent

I see now they are completely different. thanks! :thumb:

In you picture I can't see the dowel pin that goes in the cam. If you didn't have the dowel pin in there when the car was running, that could be the reason why the bolt snapped.
