Break in oil?

Unlike the old flat tappet cam engines there’s not really a break in on a 4g63. As uncle Buschur once stated when asked about hammering on freshly built engines on the dyno, it’s a 4g63 with tight tolerances not an old small block Chevy, it’s either together right or it isn’t, if it blows apart from putting power to it with 10 miles on it it’ll blow apart putting power to it after driving it easy for 1000 miles or whatever people call a break in.

With that being said, the way we’ve always done it is buy the absolute cheapest oil in whatever weight we’re using wherever we happen to be shopping and 2 of the cheapest oil filters they have that will fit it. Start it and run it to temp a time or 2 with the cheap oil and filter, drain it and refill it with the cheap stuff and cheap filter and put a few street miles on it and maybe some light boost part throttle pulls, refill it with whatever oil we plan to use in it and whatever filter we plan to use, take it to the dyno and beat the crap out of it. If you’re going to be using 20w50 Walmarts “super tech” house brand conventional comes in 20w50 and is about as cheap as it gets. When it comes to oil under normal use oil is oil, won’t be in there long term and won’t be reving on it hard with it in there so no worry about it at that point, it’s like steve said, you’re just going to be throwing it out after short use anyway. The zinc content and such for us only really counts when you’re spinning it fast, it’s not crucial at start up or cruising conditions like an old flat tappet cam shaft.
