Got a 99 gst with a few mods just put a new Garrett t28 because my mechanics said it was turbo seals and coolant was in exsaust from turbo. Runs great just when I’m idling and in low speed a going through the gears it still leaves a giant cloud of white smoke. Very oil smelling plan is to compression test I guess my question is what is suppose to be stock compression? Any tips on next steps maybe pistons? What brand.. I’m not sure it’s wild because it runs so good.
 
Considering the turbo was changed, make sure the turbo drain tube is not restricted, kinked etc. Do NOT use silicone on the drain tube gaskets, it will squish into the oil path, reducing flow and causing smoke, mostly when you let off the throttle.
Awesome, I’ve notice looking into it more it does leak a little bit of oil from return line. Put a new AN fitting on but it’s leaving from the pan side where the braided line goes into AN fitting. And the valve cover has a little crack by plugs is kind of pooling up in there.. could that make it smoke like that? Don’t mean to ask stupid questions I have yet to work on a. Car like this.
 
Also too don’t over look a faulty PCV system. With higher mileage engine more crankcase pressure is to be expected. Best way to eliminate crank case pressure is breathers on the valve cover into a catch can. Solved my smoking issue
 
Don't overlook the small stuff. Jumping into a full rebuild is last resort so you shouldn't even be thinking about pistons yet.
Do you have oil in your intake or oil in the exhaust?
I also agree on checking your PCV and crankcase breather. If those are restricted/blocked/capped you will blow a smoke screen every time.
Valve stem seals too can be a culprit or cascading failure too (crankcase pressure pushing oil past the seals).
