saskatoon,
Today as I was driving home, cruising on the highway at about 60 mph in 4th gear and went WOT to pass somebody who was being a jackass.

Half way though 4th gear at about 6500 rpm, it felt like I popped out of 4th gear, so I went to put it back in gear and nothing, it goes into gear but revs freely.

So I quickly slowed down to a stop thinking I busted my transfer case. I checked under the car ect. no leaks.

I than attempt to put the car in gear again and move. 1st to 3rd work fine, although you can hear something dragging inside the transmission, 4th is non existent, put it in to forth and it just revs like its in neutral and 5th works fine.

I never had any problems going from 3rd to 4th gear or vice versa. Those were the 2 gears that gave me the least amount of problems.

1st to second would grind occasionally 2nd to 3rd same. 3rd to 4th always smooth as butter, and 4th to 5th same. No gears have ever popped out on me.

I noticed on my limp home that it wouldn't always let me put it into 2nd gear. no grind or anything, just wouldn't go in.

From this description can you tell me how serous this damage is? and what exactly broke?

As far as mods go I have a evo 16g @ 28 psi, built motor, and what was a recently rebuilt transmission, with heavy duty synchros, upgraded shift forks and shift rails. Had about 18,000 k on it.

If your getting no grinding or loud noises while its in 4th then i would say u didnt blow the gear out, sounds like the syncro went out on you, if its grinding going into other gears try bleeding the clutch if thats not it then take it back to the tranny shop that did the rebuild and see what they can do... no matter that tranny works never cheep :(

how hard were you shifting when this happened? you may have bent a shift fork.. Did it make loud sound, or just disappear? Also, check your shift cables and make sure they didnt slip out of the mounts on the tranny or anywhere else..

nevermind.. haha.. You have good forks, so thats not it.. I think its the cables.. if its not that, do like awdtsi724
said and go back to that tranny shop, and ttaaallkkk to them.. Dont start being an ass right off the bat, cause I can tell you your level of service will drop at that shop..

4th gear is the weakest of all the tranny gears. It's not as strong due to be back-cut for the bearing.

Is your recent rebuild backed by some sort of warranty or guarantee? If so, I'd take it back to them.

^^^ There you go.. Really, no matter what happened, if your tranny is f***ing up, then take it back, and let them handle.. Its their responsibility, anyway.. haha:thumb:

No warrantee left. Maybe not quite 6500 rpm but about 100 to 110 mph im guessing where it snapped. I wasn't really paying attention more watching the road. Shifted from 5th to 4th stayed in 4th for a bit than punched it, turbo spooled and I just sat back and held on, and then after about a second and a half SNAP rpm shot up to redline and I left off. I haven't been running this high of boost for the last bit I had been driving around on 10 psi because of bad weather. first day back on 28 and I blew up my tranny. :(

Just a Q: how would bleeding the clutch help? Clutch works good.

Ever find what happened to your tranny, same eact thing happened to me, no 4th gear.

It's completely true. Mainly the only thing you can do to protect it is to run a tuff trans fluid like Redline Heavyweight (if weather permits). From the OP, the thing that weakened the gear was that HWY driving. You aren't putting a lot of power stress on the transmission, but you are putting a lot of heat stress on it because it is constantly moving (like the engine) and the heat gets to the gears and next thing you know *pop* when you go WOT.

the syncros are out or you broke or bent the shifting fork. were you power shifting or did you not push the clutch in all of the way. if you have an aftermarket clutch system sometimes the clutch push rod needs to be upgraded. not a break your bank part but well worth it. i put one on my 1990 eclipse gs-t with my act 2600 and it made the whole clutch system more ridged and feeling like its brand new again. worth the less than $20 for the part. extremepsi.com carries the part.

Sorry it was neither of those. 4th gear completely sheared. Both the counter shaft and main shaft 4th gears are gone.

I was using heavyweight redline.

You can put a transmission together with no synchro's and it will stay in gear. Trying to change them would be the issue. A synchro is just a brake that helps the sleeve and gear reach the same rpm "synchronize" before engaugement. These transmissions are notorious for shearing 4th, and even 3rd gear.

Tell me about it, this is the 3rd time ive sheared a 4th gear. :hellyeah:
