I am swapping an good engine from a bent frame car into a parts car and I would like to start upgrading asap after other mods like basic fuel and a tuning hardware, I am wonder if my big 16g will hold up. I want to end up running around 20-25 psi and I’ve heard the turbo can handle but will the internal wastegate handle that? If not can you put an aftermarket internal in or is that not a thing? Also is it possible to almost delete the wastegate actuator and just put on an external wastegate? Thanks

There are MHI 16g's and then there are all the chinabay turbos that call themselves a 16g.

The answer to your question has a lot to do with which one you have.
Pictures of said turbo will help.

Okay I will try and get some during the week, it has a metal blue tag that says big 16g if that helps

I have an other one that just has td05h stamped on it and looks a bit smaller

Yep china 16g, will it make 20-25lbs? Probably, will it make it for a long time? Probably not. I've got a souvenir of one of those in my tool box. We found half the compressor wheel in the air filter, the other half is somewhere in cylinder 4. Around 29lbs it came apart, the wheel looks like some cheap pot metal.

Given the majority of these China-based 16G knockoffs come with a wastegate hole the size of a dime, you'll more than likely end up running 25psi or so because the boost creep which results from the basically non-functional wastegate system with won't allow anything less to be achieved. Should you plan to use this turbo, you'll want to port the wastegate hole if you want any chance of proper boost control.

Another bit of advice is to be sure you're feeding the oil source from the filter housing to keep the thrust system well-lubricated as a thrust failure is inevitable at pressure that high.
