1G Best place to install catch can fittings on valve cover..

Hey guys I did a search and found a few similar topics like size and type etc, but couldn't find anything on best placement. (For street and strip setup, 550-600hp)

I've read before, but I can't find it now, that it's best to have both of the fittings on the back of valve cover for drag setups because of heavy acceleration driving the oil to the back of the valve cover, but I don't know if that's the best I never saw it done that way.

The two most popular ways I have seen it done, are..
(Pic1 unpainted valve cover. I didn't draw the stuff on the pic..)
-One out of the left side (breather) and one out of the back side (pcv)..
An
(Pic2 black valve cover)
-Both comming out of the top of the valve cover, One top/front-pointing <<left<< and one top/rear-also pointing <<left<<
..that's if your standing in front of the car, facing it.

What would be the best way? One of these? Or another way? Any info would help before I buy the rest of my fittings.

Where the pcv line taps are located on the cover doesn't really matter. Do some more reasearch on properly designed pcv systems/ a system that will fit your needs. This write up will teach you all you need to know

I'm going to be running an atmospheric vented catch can and a jmf drag manifold so no vacuum or anything will go to it, I was reading up on enginebasics.com about different catch cans and the needs for both so I wasn't sure if fitting placement was am issue also.

People install taps on the top of the cover because it's A) easy to make a hole and weld in the AN fitting. B) you can install a bigger fitting. C) some people like the look better.

If mounted on the side of the cover the fittings can't be as large. But People do put large fittings on the side it's not as easy, looks like fittings in the image.

For your setup I would just weld in some -8an fittings in stock pcv and breather location. Like your first image but with bigger fittings... the fittings in that image look smaller then -8an, I maybe wrong.

Other then clearance and looks, Placement isn't an issue.

Due to catch can placement and engine placement...I had something similar to this in my 4g63 swappped mighty max... it worked great.

You may want to read that post on catch cans before you vent to atmosphere.

Here is an example of my set up on my 2g. Doesn't always have to be out the back.

Don't vent your catch can atmospherically unless you've read up on it. Most of us tap in to pre turbo intake. You can weld/tap a fitting to your intake pipe and run it to the catch can. Open filters will make a mess.

I recently went threw this. there are two different types of cans sealed and vented. For me and most people seams like sealed is the way to go. I had a vented can with no vacume going back to the intake and my car didn't like to run as well. Then when I sealed my vented can without vacume the dipstick would pop out. So I got a catch can from a well known member on this forum. It is a sealed can with with all correct fittings. I would for sure recommend keeping your pcv system. A bunch of people get rid of it but does more harm than good. I decided to keep the pcv in the factory location and had two fittings welded in top of the cover and the port on the left of the valve cover sealed. I then tapped my forced performance intake pipe with a fitting so I can have vacume coming from the can. I think this is the best option for me. I hope this helps but i recommend you read the pcv thread that Calan made. It is very informative. Another note is you want to keep the baffles in your valve cover. And if you decide to have the fittings welded in top make sure the person knows what there doing. The fittings have to be just right for our hoods to shut. It is a tight fit.

Just curious, is it common at all for people to run a sealed catch can to their exhaust so the exhaust will create a vacuum similar to running it pre turbo but no chance of oil in intercooler pipes?

I have only heard of a few dsms that tried that system. There is a thread with a similar question and everyone was against it, a member replied to that thread with tons of detail and proven facts as to why that system is not a good option for us... It's more of a supra thing.

Did read that article,s link on dry-sump oil systems? I'd prefer the closed system with lines back to the intake for the vacuum.

Wish that purple cover was mine haha. It's not mine just an image I saved awhile back. Last cover I shaved took too long to get it 100 percent. ... then I dropped it and cracked the hell out of it haha. But that work on the purple one was done by these guys....

This is how I did mine. Two 8an fittings welded and another 8an going to preturbo intake. No dipstick pop out here . On my talon I'll prbly use the existing ports and port then to fit 10an fittings.

Here's a pic of the one in doing now.. Im leaving the Mitsubishi on there just shaved the lines and dohc 16v etc, and the front weld line things.. But before I drill into it that s why i started this thread I just got my can last night it's pretty sick

I know a bunch of people said go sealed but I bought this before everyone said that . Its baffled inside with m18x1.5 to an10 fittings, and a magnetic drain plug.. Its not big at only a half liter so I'll just have to keep an eye on that level tube to see how full it is
