Hey guys, recently my belt started squeeling really bad and on the way back to CT it killed my alternator. I then replaced it and then it did it again and snapped my alternator belt and took out my power steering ( its on the same pulley so obviously PS went ) and now replaced the belt and have a new alternator in and still squeels when you first start it up for about 30 seconds then goes away. Any ideas of what could be causing this? also the belt is tight too I made sure it wasn't loose because that would do it. Im lost and honestly I don't want anything to get damaged by this.

Inputs??

thanks guys!

Check and make sure all the pulleys are aligned properly. Making the belt to tight can also make it squeal. I would also check crank shaft end play just to rule that out. Also check and make sure the crank pulley hasn't started to separate.

check your belt deflection and make your pulleys are in good shape.. last thing you want is a snapped belt :/

Thanks so much guys it just keeps coming lose now for some reason and I just keep tightening it up and everytime I do it stops squeeling but ill check and make sure all the pulleys are good and its aligned properly.

Yep it's definitely either loose or bad belt or out of alignment! :thumb:

I have this same issue...my tensioner keeps coming loose. I tighten it and the squeal goes away or is faint. To get rid of the squeal after this, I actually rub a bit of Valve Grind Compound on both sides of the belt then start the car...seems to help out a lot. I've used the belt squeal spray and it just makes the squeal worse...

I had the same issue on my GST and tried everything the only thing I found that worked until I replace all the pulleys and gears was needs-foot. If that does not work check your balancer or the crank pulley if they are ok check to see if the pulley on the alternator is correct

Same problem here, check the mounting bolt in the bottom. Mine is ovaled from have a loose bolt and shifting. Easy way to tell is if the alternator is a little lopsided. Solution is drilling a bigger bolt hole and getting bigger bolt / sleeve to straighten it up

Just another Possibility
have yet to cehck my Pulleys but almost sure this is my problem, hope things work out for you! having to put Alt belts on in Parking lots is not fun... well not fun in General LOL

I actually just fixed this issue on my GSX. I replaced my alternator and my belt, but I used a Autozone belt. That thing squealed horrible. I ended up using a OEM belt and that solved my problem.

There is something to be said about not buying anything at Autozone.... really never do it! On top of the separation in the pulley you want to watch out for glazed belts which is caused when a pulley has resistance and causes the belt to get hard or slippery due to the sliding motion. Also any coolant that gets on your belt cause cause it to squeal very easily.

New belts will stretch after awhile which is why you need to tighten often. take a look while the car is running maybe the entire ps pump is bent from the tension over the years which would cause the misalignment. I just had this problem with mine recently. Had to bend it back to stop the squel.

Soo i came across this issue too now.

I replaced a frayed alt belt, and installed a fluidampr harmonic balancer tightened up real snug squeels on idle surges when cold then Quiets down. Does the belt just need to beak in? Didn't have squeeling issues previously. And i did grind the timing cover to fit the fluidampr. Belt is OEM, alt is origional oem (LOL) and fluidampr has a drive around the block on it, after the car is warm it doesnt seem to squeel due to the consistancy of idle.

I tried to use a wire brush on the alt pulley and water pump pulley to get some rust off, didn't seem to make a difference, (water pump and pulley has 13k on it and are also oem. is it possible it's slipping of the fluidamprs anodized surface?

I had that issue with an unorthodox crank pulley, but my new fluidampr solved that. The one I got was used so maybe that fresh new surface is causing that...Also check if there is any oil getting on your belts? I had a front pump seeping right on a belt....almost unnoticeable... good luck

Just a thought. Are you tightening up the hold down bolt on the front of the alternator? The adjuster is just to get the belt tight, the bolt on the front of the alternator is actually the one that holds it tight and in place so if you are soley relying on the adjuster to keep it tight, it will probably continue to loosen up. Not sure if you are using that bolt or not but you say it keeps coming loose so just making it clear.

Theres no oil leaks what so ever. I tightened it up more it has deflection of about 1/4" and can be twisted only to 90*

We'll see what happens. The car has been started twice since these parts have been put on. Car hasnt driven since last fall.

Oh by the way, i knew thia but maybe you didn't, this thread is almost a year old.
