So i finally got around to finishing my budget Laser. I got it with bent valves and trashed guides. So i bought i complete head off a friend of mine. came off a running car...everything checked out perfect on the head. I installed it, lined up the timing perfect and bolted everything back up. i bumped the starter to check the timeing and everything was A-OK:thumb: i started the motor and i jumped up to 4,100rpm and stayed there. i shut it off...adjusted the throttle linkedge and turned it again. it reacted the same just very slightly lower so i cut it off again. i assume it is a sensor somewhere. i went inside the checked a few forums on here and went back outside.....that is when i saw that the timing belt loooked loose between the cam gears:cry: . I never heard any valve to piston contact when i last shut it off but the belt IS loose (about a tooth on the exhaust side) Could the belt have jumped when i cut it off at 4,000rpm? is it a cheap belt??? (i bought it at pepboys). should i line everything back up and try again? i would hate to do it if there is a whole other problem.

p.s. The casting mark on the block reads G4CP not 4G63. it all runs the same but could this effect the timing

thank you

All I can tell you is that everyone recommends getting an OEM belt straight from the dealer, nowhere else. Good luck man.

No i didn't replace the tensioner. when i bought the car less then a year ago it had been replaced a few months prior to me purchesing it. it hasn't been a year yet but i'll give it a shot with the new tensioner and OEM belt. Also....any reason why my car's rpm shoots up to 4K and sticks there when i start it?

usually it wont bend valves until about 2 teeth off.. get a OEM belt.. how are you setting the timeing? How do the pullie's look? did you remove the balance shafts? pull it apart recheck the t-belt reset it make sure to fallow the vfaq and its all nice and tight..

I lined everything back up according to Vfaq. yes the balance shafts are removed. everything looks to spec. i started it and there looks to be some wobble in the belt between cams. how common is this?

really one little secret ive learned is if you use a snap ring plier and put it in the two holes on the tensioner you can get a perfect tight rotate on it.. and make it all tensioned nicely.. also make sure that everything lined up well really it shouldnt wobble in there.. i mean i usually find about 1/2 an inch of play normal..
