Hey all,

2G, 6 bolt block, 7 bolt head. So I recently did my timing belt maybe 200 miles ago. Changed out belt, both pulleys, tensioner & water pump. Tension was set correctly using the loose tensioner pin method & verified proper tensioner arm gap. Recently my timing belt started squeeling on startup. I thought it was an accessory belt, but I took all my accessory belts off and started the car and the squeal was still there. It goes away maybe after 1 min of idling. It’s not a constant noise, almost sounds like a pulley? All replacement parts were OEM Mitsu.

I just installed brand new tensioner, idler pulley and tensioner pulley. Belt is tensioned properly within spec. Started the car after install and did not make noise. After sitting a few days, started the car and it once again started squeeling on startup again.. went away after a few minutes.

Has anybody else experienced this? What could be causing a belt squeal noise from the timing belt system other than the pulleys?

Thanks

There’s no bearing for the oil pump. The pulley bolt directly to one of the gears. There is a “bearing” (not sure of the technical name) for the front balance shaft.

From my experience bearings will always make noise if it’s bad.

Maybe be I’m wrong about it being a bearing. Don’t want to point you in the wrong direction.

Hm. That’s odd then. My balance shafts are deleted, so that’s not possible. And I doubt it’s either pulley, since both have been new OEM. Are there any other bearings in that system?

Yeah it’s weird bc it goes away when you raise the rpms. I might get hate for this but try a LITTLE wd40 on the underside of the tbelt while it’s running and see if it goes away. Doubt anything bad will happen.

Oh boy, that would make me cringe maybe I can do the deodorant on the back of the belt trick to see if that works.. I’m just nervous LOL especially since the belt literally has a couple hundred miles on it.

Hey all, here’s a video of what I am experiencing. This is right after startup.

So you have this noise even without all belts, correct? The noise is a bit different from what I imagined. Did you make sure if there is no contact with cam gears/timing belt/pulleys?
If I were you, I would remove the timing belt and see if the oil pump spins smoothly/flawlessly without getting caught. If it's hard to spin the drive gear by finger, the noise could be from the oil pump. Also in the same time, remove all cam caps to check all journals.

Correct, this noise was present with all belts removed.

If you are referring to contact with the timing cover, that is correct. I pulled the timing cover when I replaced the pulleys and it had no indication of any wear or contact. Same goes for the pulleys and the belt.

I think that is going to be my next step unfortunately. I appreciate the suggestion!

I dont hear a squeal. I do hear something. if it were a seven bolt Id looking into the cranksensor. You tourqed the pullies to the 14lbs or whatever. I cant hear much over the valve train
