Hey I got a scraping inconsistent belt noise not sure if it's timing belt or another serpentine belt or related pulley. Haven't really run across many belt noises in my young automotive history. Video attached. Thanks for input!

A quick way to find out which belt it is, is by talking a cup of water put a bit a water one at a time on each belt. If noise goes away is that belt, inspect that belts tension, look for tears or cracks and also its pulleys.

If belts are perfect, as well tension and belt dresser don't work I would inspect the pulley. I know my car crank pulley has a peace missing on outter wall thats causing my ten sec of squeek in its first start. Other member preaviously posted he changed all belts and tensioner pulley still had the squeek untill he had changed the pulley. Any chance you know what brand the pulley is. Do the easy check before ruling the pulley.

Had similar problems, turned out to be the lower pivot/ mount hole bushings on an aftermarket alternator I installed were larger than the bolt. This allowed the alternator to cock slightly when tightening the belt. This misaligned the grooved belt causing it to whine.

Also if your harmonic balancer has taken a shit (separated) it will misalign belts slightly and whine and churp.

I haven't been able to look into my a whole lot further since it's been raining all week and my 1g is in the garage getting a new head put on. However, the noise has lessened leaving me to believe that it was probably rubbing on the timing cover or something. I did previously notice lots of oil from lower timing belt/ oil filter housing area maybe that's related. It's too bad cause the belt was just changed....

That's a bigger problem then your squeak LOL. Oil on the timing belt will kill it, then your new head. I had the bad luck of having the lower bolt that holds the hydraulic tensioner to the front case break. Apparently the p.o. put a nice gates Kevlar belt on and just barely over torqued that bolt. It held on for over a year after I bought it, then let go and oil was pouring out. It's supposed to have a dab of rtv on it. Check oil pump seal, front main too. If the t belt was rubbing on the cover it would be constant.

Although at least some of that oil is coming from up higher on the front of the block. Speed will push the oil all over the place so, clean all that off with some degreaser and put some dye for oil in there. Drive it or maybe just start on a lift or a jack and stands ( save your life) and use the u.v pen to find out where it's coming from. I'm sure valve cover, but check oil lines for turbo, could have a leaky crush washer or maybe drain gasket.

My GM alternator chirp as well, I thought it was unit itself so exchanged it (life time warranty). On my third one now and still the same chirping noise. Probably misalignment.
Thanks:thumb:

Ok then either spray it while it's running or, take it off and run it for sec. I know it runs the w/p but just don't run it long. Narrow it down and get it fixed cause I can cause the belt to fray and break. I had it happen on a friend's pos sentra.
