I have an a/t transmission, and my bell house cracked on my awd tranny. it is a crack from the top bolt exhaust side all around the bolt like an inch down around. it didn't go through as far as I know, I am thinking about JB welding, alot of that, in the crack, should that be ok?

try getting it welded, i had a transmission that had a crack on the bell-housing and i had it welded

You are missing a bolt or dowel pin somewhere, or you torqued the bell-housing on imporperly. JB is a bad idea and makes it even more difficult to weld later on when you find it won't work. There is nothing wrong with welding it other than having to pull it from the car. Trust me, just remove it and get it welded right. JB will not do anything.

I know why it broke, but again, can you tell WHY Jb weld wouldn't do the trick? I don't mean to be a dick but, I just kinda want to know. I really have no time or money to take it off get it welded pay for it and get it back on.

I have been TIG welding for many years. JB weld will not work, because it is weak. It's okay for a quick fix to patch up holes or leaks maybe, but something that will have pressure on it and that will expand and contract due to temp changes will crack the JB weld easy. JB weld is not strong enough for that kind of thing. We are talking a trans bell-housing here, not your moms lamp. A real weld can also crack if done by an inexperienced person. The weld has to be of good quality and done by a pro for it to last a long time.

yeah what twisiting or movement is the tranny doing? espicially right there, other than the vibration from the car running, there isn't much force that is pulling or pushing the block and tranny is there? the force would be on the motor mount right?

I've had one welded that cracked from a broken bolt. The way aluminum fatigues, the crack will most likely keep growing if you dont have it welded properly. Get it done right or it may progress into something that isn't fairly easily repairable. Jb weld isn't that strong and it will be hard to get it clean enough to stick well.

Well this is a temporary fix and if there is no force this shoud last awhile, I will be getting a new transmission, but waiting to convert to maunal next summer, Ijust need this to last...

Well, you won't take anyone's advice... So why do you keep asking? It would be smart to have it welded correctly. There is inevtiably going to be pressure on the transmission. If it were me, I wouldn't take the chance. But, since it is only until next summer, it might work... But that is still a year away.

Yes thanks for your input I am being very stubborn but I need to know WHY it would fail, there is no stress on that part when it is fully bolted on except for the vibration of the car running... It is temporary.. and it would start to crack again first, before it snapped.... so I appreciate the input but I would like to know WHY JB weld is apperently not strong, It can last with the tempeture as it is rated to 600 degrees.

Glue it. Stand by to pay triple the cost when your welder has to scrape all that crap out to get a clean weld area.

It won'tf ucking work.

GET IT?

Jesus goddamned christ. You noobs think we just get on here to talk out our asses and squabble with you wet-eared pinheads?

Oh, and welcome to DSMtuners. Tell whoever reminds you to take your next breath we said he can retire now.
