This is a NOOB question... I keep reading about setting base timing to 5*... I recently changed my head gasket, bought DSMlink, and changed oil pump (removed BS). Does any of this mean I should be setting base timing?

Can some one point me in the right direction please? Thanks...

You can't set base timing on your car. If you did the timing belt correctly, the base timing should be 5* BTDC. If you want to double check it with a timing light, DSM Link gives you the ability to ground timing in order to get a proper reading.

Base timing can not be set manually on the 97-99 timing systems. It's all taken care of internally / electronically.

Setting base timing is for those with a Cam Angle Sensor (CAS) attached to the Right side of the intake cam (1G, 6-bolt swapped 2G, etc . . .)

Enjoy your 7-bolt while it lasts :)

It's actually on the left side, if you're looking at it from the engine bay. It obviously can't be on the right since the cam gear is there.

Correct- the "Right" side of the car is the passenger side . . . hence in japan they have "Right-Hand-Drive" vehicles.

Ah, ok. I'm really not used to looking at my car in that perspective (seeing as I work on it more than I drive it  ).

The conventions for right and left are relative to a person sitting in the car looking forward.
That's how it works, so wrap your mind around it.
