So I have a 98 Eclipse GST and the other day when driving home from work it decided to fuel cut/ go into safety mode or limp mode however you wanna call it and I have no idea what the problem could be.

My first thought was bad fuel pump cause I’ve had a similar issue with my old Honda civic that decided to fuel cut due to my brother putting the wrong gas in it and messing up the fuel pump. The last time I started it with someone outside the car to look for anything like smoke or something that doesn’t sound or look right and it was blowing out black smoke as I turned it on.

It would start and sound fine the first couple seconds but then proceeded to fuel cut and die out. I looked up what the issue could be and heard that it could be due to dirty/faulty injectors and wanted to get better information from someone who had dealt with these cars for years and knows the insides and outs of these cars. I do know the previous owner replaced the stock turbo with a slightly bigger one that isn’t much bigger than stock and have no clue if they changed out the injectors for that so it would be very helpful if someone knows something about this issue I am having.

Your statements of symptoms are very unclear.
Does it idle?
If it does what does it do when you drive around normally?
If it doesn't idle what changed in the last day or two? Did something change right after full throttle?
Does your stock boost gauge peg out but the car feels like it's doing nothing?
Please add a vehicle profile under "members cars" tab

So when it turns on it try’s to idle but eventually just drops and dies out. I’ve noticed the stock boost gauge when turned on shows it’s building boost but nothings happening.

I wouldn’t say full throttle but at least half throttle it just randomly started to fuel cut and attempt to idle but would die out if I came to a stop or released the throttle when trying to go full throttle.

After the issue started it’ll only go up to 2k rpms when I started it the next day with someone outside of it to look said it was blowing out black smoke. When I started it the day after the first few seconds it wanted to idle but eventually stopped and died out unless if I was holding the throttle to keep the rpms above 1k.

Sorry if what I’m saying doesn’t make any sense still trying to learn about stuff like this

Sounds very much like a boost leak. Boost leak test it. At the very least look at the pipes and make sure one didn't blow off.

If the factory boost gauge is acting like you have boost when just the ignition is on or the car is idling there is a problem with the MAF, wiring or ECU. The factory boost gauge is driven by the ECU based on the airflow signal from the MAF.

Black smoke is way too much fuel for the current conditions. If the MAF/ECU is getting bad data thinking there is a lot more airflow that real it's going to over fuel.

Please slow down and format your ideas with punctuation. Run on dialog makes it difficult to figure out what you getting at.

Boost leak check and then MAF and wiring like said. The factory boost gauge does not in reality show any real info. The ecu tells it to move but the ecu does not even know boost when using the MAF. The MAF reports air volume and then the ecu will move the factory boost gauge based on that. So if air metering issue that would explain the boost gauge showing boost and black smoke from car being very rich as way to much is being injected due to it thinking there is much more air volume there.
