I got a mitsubishi eclipse spyder gst 1996 automatic and not even a month went by and the curse of the 2nd gen got me it crank walked... on the express way... big loss of power and horrible knocking from idle to red line...:beatentodeath: now I am going to replace my engine with a stock JDM 7 bolt my mods are god speed fmic greddy type-r bov injen turbo intake and greddy air filter. Now do you guys think that if I buy SET OF ACL TRI-METAL RACE SERIES BEARING SET, that my crank walk problem wont come back to rape my wallet again? the engine I am going to purchase is from tigerjapanese.com and has about 25-35k miles, please help... more options would be great... $2,700 budget and I dont know where I can do a 6 bolt swap...I live in miami florida, thanks in advance.:(...:dsm:...

How do you know it is crankwalk? Did you measure for it?

Whether crankwalked or not, I would recommend disassembling the engine to determine the extent of the damage. You may be able to rebuild it.

+1 to Locke, you can't assume its crankwalk, you could've just spun a bearing, usually crankwalk is very very rare on automatics from my experiences.

Listen to everyone, check it first before you do anything. IF it is indeed crankwalk, I would do a 6 bolt swap. It's not hard at all.. A little motor mount grinding to clear teh water pump and a few little things besides teh sensor and it's in. MIne was a breeze. But definately get that oil pan off and check teh bearings and measure crank thrust movement first.

+1 And if it is crankwalk it shouldn't cost too much more to go 6 bolt instead of 7. Good Luck.

Most likely not crankwalk on the automatic. When you engage the clutch it causes the PP, to pull on the crank. Usually not an issue on a stock clutch but can and has happened. When people start to install real high pressure PP's it will really try to pull the crankout and cause it to walk.

My mechanic builds 7 bolt strokers and swears the crank is stronger than the 6 bolt 2.4 crank and gives a full life time warranty against crankwalk. I would build a stroker 7 bolt. My buddy even swapped his 6 bolt out of his VR4 for one of his stroker 7 bolts. Hes seen a few of his 6 bolt strokers crank break and not one of his 7 bolts have failed to this day from what Ive last heard.

Really, maybe I will have to ship my block out there to him, got his name and number?

I'm not sure if he still is building motors and shipping them out. He has mainly moved to transmissions only but he still may build you a motor. He was running a special. He would fully assemble a 2.3 7 bolt with the wiseco/eagle combo for $2k with a good core. Send an email to him on jackstransmissions.com and he may work a deal with you, but he did tell me he was thinking of stop building motors because of liability issues. You would be amazed how many people dont check there fluids on new motors and blow them up.

Its going to cost me 2,400 to rebuild it assuming the core and head are still useable

this is how the incident happened I was on the express way on my way back home. before I got on the express way I ran with a stock stealth rt and made it look bad...LOL and when I got on the express way almost 1minut after I started to hear a slite rumble in the engine and huge power loss Im talking about it haveing to be flord to gain 2 or 3 mph... drove home about 10 miles and with the car in park opened up the hood and it was knocking horribly from idle to red line apart from that I took it to the mechanic and he told me the engine was blown... and wasnt worth rebuilding... told me to get a new motor because the knocking was that bad. I have gone crazzy trying to get a helping hand but I am new to this... and good help is hard to come by. This is my first DSM and its my first turbo car and I fell in love with it but I feel as if I will have to let it go ... now I opened up the hood and my motor mounts have craked and that just adds to the bill. I love the car but I cant spend a fortune on it. my wife is pregnant and I need the cash... Im thinking about selling it If anyone gives me $1800 they can take it home..I really dont want to let it go but have no other choice.

Thanks for all the help and I will continue to love DSMs for life.

Sorry man. That's just bad luck. You could always open it up and see the extent of the damage. Even if a mechanic says it "sounds" really bad, but then again don't all blown motors sound really bad? haha

dose any one know were I can do a six bolt swap down here in miami florida???
If I can do one for under 3 grand I can keep the car.

It's not hard doing a 6 bolt swap check the link below. If you can do it yourself or find someone on the board to give you a hand you can get one in for under 3 grand and still have money left over for dsmlink.

You should start a new a thread asking for some dsm help down in miami. I blew my 6 bolt and picked up a block for 5 bills, and then me and a buddy swapped out blocks in a couple of hours.

I had a similar experience 6 weeks ago. A friend of mine and I were having fun on the freeway. We both have 98 gst's with almost identical mods. We were both dead even at the top of third when his car suddenly lost all power and began knocking loud enough for me to hear it from my car. We thought crankwalk. Wrong. Spun a bearing. $2k and 6 weeks later the motor is back together and ready to go. It pays to check for crankwalk. We were able to reuse the block. Semi-Stock 7-bolt rebuild using Ross pistons, 1g rods, Reground Crank, ARP Bolts and Studs, MLS HG, BC 272s, BC spring kit, 3g lifters. Some would call this a budget build. Look we're looking at this as a learning experience.

That sounds awesome it must be running nice but the problem is that I have no experiance with this type of thing and need some one to do it for me...and That is what I cant find down here in Miami It's pissing me off because I'm driving my wifes car a 90 civic and it's killing me slooooowwwllllyyyy I need some one's help down here in the MIA please.

How many threads about this do you think you need to open?
