My MOMO knob fits very well, no threads are exposed. You could look into one of those, but they are quite costly as compared to a Sparco or other brand that will work just the same.

Has anyone had this problem with the counterweight though? I dont understand because if its made to fit on my stock shifter, and my stock shift knob fits on the B&M, why doesnt the counterweight fit?

Why don't you just get another stock knob? That way, the threads wont be exposed, and it will all fit perfectly. I had an aftermarket knob on my car (shitty one that used screws to stay on) and it had a gap with the boot, so back on went my stock knob.

Im going to get the MachV OEM heavy Mitsu Shift knob when I get tired of my worn out stock one. It looks just like the stock one but its a heavier and makes shifting a little sweeter (I had it on my old 1G)

I am liking that MachV OEM style, because i would like a heavier knob, but dont want anything ricey. Does that fit on the B&M shifter though? The counter wight is supposed to but doesnt. Thanks for the help

It suppossed to fit on the stock threads. So, if the B&M has the same threads as the stock shifter, then yes, it will fit.

I have that exact shifter, it works great and it feels like I can shift just as fast as an auto.
But and it comes with a big but, I had to re-engineer it so it would work.
First off:
The “pivot point rod” is screwed into the shifter. So, by using your imagination you can guess what happened, it unscrewed during shifting and became wobbly. Cold weld (a two part automotive resin) fixed this problem. It has a tensile strength of 30,000 psi (I believe).

Second:
It did not come with a bearing to fit inside the “pivot point raiser” (purple thing). The “pivot point rod” has a smaller diameter than the bore in the “pivot point raiser”, so that was loose and wobbly. I had to make my own bearing out of two brass tubes and grease.

The tubes can be found at hobby shops or at a hardware store (found mine at ace)

Yep..I had this problem with my b&m replica too. It was wayyyy too wobbly. while it was in gear, I could move the knob back n forth about half an inch each way. WAYY too much wobbly play, so it made getting into gear a little hard..always grinded.

So I just gave in & bought a real b&m..anybody want to by my old b&m replica? You'd just have to make new bearings for the 'purple thing'.. PM me if interested...

I Have the BM knockoff and mine wobbled but I just had a loose bolt that I thought was tight.

I know this is old, but since it's been brought back...
For all the kids looking for a "short throw shifter", why not just remove the stock metal shifter, draw an index line, remove roughly 1.5"- 2" of metal beneath the threads, and have a friend(cost me 1 6-pack which I helped split ) /exhaust shop/yourself match up the index line and weld it back together ? The stock shifter really has the gears nicely spaced, but that's just me, besides once you get that new "short throw shifter" installed, you'll probably still not be happy with the height of the new shifter, so don't forget this is always an option as well or maybe you can combine the two methods .

The ebay one should work just the same....I have the pacesetter short shifter..it was $90 and it reduces throw and stick hight by 80 to 90 %...... not a bad deal for 90 bucks...works good man..jsut something to think about

Just picked up my 98 TSI AWD, and i put in my B&M Short shifter, and its kinda weird.. when i am in gear, just crusin, i can hear what sounds like quite grinding, like the gears arent all the way in or something.

The car didnt make this noise when i first bought it with the stock shifter in it. also, when i am in 5th gear, and i can hear the noice.. pushing the shifter forward and holding it as far forward as it will go, makes the noise almost go away, but it does make it more quiet.

Is this shifter not allowing my trans to get all the way into gear? or could their be another problem that just started? could it be as simple as repaceing my stock bushings? any and all help would be very helpful. Thanks

I have the B&M short shifter, Symborski shifter plate bushings, and the Speedsource shifter cable bushings. I can tell you that with my installation, I don't have any of the problems you do.

On the other hand, what I did have, was the shifter had too much play side to side when it was in gear. Turns out I didn't put the shifter end bushing on the right way, which is a pretty commom install error. It was a quick fix though. Sorry I can't help you.

The best short throw shifter(s) you can buy for your 2g DSM are the B&M short shifter and the Fidanza short shifter... both are very good.

I have a genuine B&M short throw shifter, and I am very happy with it... feels amazing! Yes, they are pretty expensive, but if you are patient you can find a good deal. I bought my legit B&M short throw shifter in used condition; I got it on ebay for a very good price.

Seriously, I would not pay $100 more for a genuine B&M. Sounds to me like some knockoffs have small problems, but some don't. Worst case scenario; you buy a knockoff, it has a small problem. Spend $50 more and get another one. Chances are you won't have a problem in the first place. and you still come out spending less than you would if you bought the name.

well, i put my stock shifter back on today, and i can tell you, that has nothing to do with my problem. its almost like its tranny feedback on the cables. i am lost as to what to do. i am going to leave my stock shifter in there, and have someone i know who works for a tranny shop take a listen. i just dont understand what would cause this type of noise. i changed the tranny fluid, and checked my cv shafts. the boots all looked ok, and suspension looked ok. if anyone is experienced this, and may have a solution.. let me know. thanks
