Could someone provide an ebay link to the b&m knockoff. I saw this one awhile ago on ebay, now when i search for b&m short shifters i got the authenic product and not the knockoff.

Also, out of curiousity, does anyone know if the stock shift knob (stock 2g shift knob that is) will fit the threads of the b&m knockoff?

Yes, the stock knob will thread right on.

This looks like the one I have. It works great and installs in about 30min.

Wow! thats the exact one I bought. I got mine form motor energy and i too thought it would install in 30 min. Read my other two posts, i was wrong.
Do not buy the motor energy shifter. Im trying to help you out here.

Thanks guys, this post helped me finalize my decision on getting a short shifter off of ebay. Should i order metal bushings to replace my rubber one's and if so where from?

hey guys I just bought a short shifter and I was wondering if there is any bushing/cables or anything I am going to need before I install it. I dont believe there is......but I want to make sure. Or maybe get some advice about the install. I know it will be fairly easy, but we own DSM's nothing is easy!!!!ROFL
thanks ahead of time

Should be a direct drop-in. You can, however, replace both the bushings under the shifter and the ones at the end of the cables, on the tranny end, with solid metal instead of dried up old crappy rubber. A host of places sell them, and some people are using skateboard bearings and who knows what else. You can fab something too. It's not a rocket science kinda part, so if you find something that fits, and works, go for it (hence the bearings).

Result will be a stiffer more precise shifter. Also notchier, clunkier, and more mechanical. There will be no mush in it at all.

thanks.

If I change the bushing will it honestly make that much difference? I know it will obviously make some difference but how much? Thanks again

"crisp" and "precise"

It's not a BMW so I'll call it notchy and clunky. :)

But yeah, no sloppy mush. Just metal on metal.

Last summer I bought one of these Megan Racing Downpipes for my GSX & did a write up for it in the 'Bolt On' section... I guess I didn't learn my lession....

This thing is a POS. It's exactly the same design as a B&M short shifter but poorly developed. I printed off the install instructions for the B&M shifter off RRE website, get everything apart just fine, installed some shifter bushings from Energy Suspension, and Dsmlink... But this shifter was imposable.

The Pivot Shoulder was to large for the Shifter Pivot, I thought a little grease and some finagling would do, but it wouldn't slide in. I then used a hammer to drive it through the bearing doing nothing... It just left in-prints of the bearings on the Shoulder.. Obviously This piece was not machined correctly. Eventually I got fed up with messing around with it and just took half of the roller bearings out of the Shifter Pivot and slid it through and continued to connect it to the Megan (B&M Knock off) Shifter...

The last straw for me was the flange nut de-threading itself while trying to tighten the Shifter Pivot & Pivot Shoulder to the Shifter.. I couldn't get it out, so I had to use the spare (stock nut) to chase it down the thread so I would feel comfortable with it not coming off any time it felt like it.

Moral of this post. Megan Racing Short Shifter is a POS! Cost $40 on-line from various vendors.. This is what it looks like... It's up to you if you want to buy it and take half the bearings or grind the Shifter Pivot down for it to fit & not use the flanged nut that comes with the packaging.. Just consider your-selfs warned..:D

I just read a review on the Megan Racing Short Throw Shifter. It appears he had some major fitment problems. I wanted to post my thoughts on it as well to show that it may have been a maching problem with his.

I received this from a site vendor very well packaged. It came with a chrome shift knob instead of the one in the picture, which is fine.

I took my old one off, installed the new one per the directions for the actual B&M version and had absolutely no fitment problems at all. It literally went right on. This was on a 1996 Mitsubishi Spyder GS-t with no alterations to the shifter, cables, or general shifting area.

For the price, you can't beat it. However, some have obviously had fitment troubles. If that is the case, I would ask for a replacement from the vendor because they are not all bad, mine fits like a glove.

So I'm trying to figure out why there's so much play in my B&M short shifter (Knock off)..I tried tightening up the nut circled in the picture, but the nut just turns & turns...won't come off or tighten up. It's not like the pivot pin is moving either, since it's welded into the bracket. Anybody know what could be causing this to turn but not back out??

Hm dunno how it could strip though..I just put the nut on about a month ago when I installed it. :(
In most instances, when you tighten or loosen a nut/bolt and it does not progress either way across the thread pattern, it is stripped.

PS - Most of the play with our shifters occurs here (Blue Circle).

I would say either the nut is stripped, or the pivot pin has broken loose where you said its welded (maybe this would explain the slop). While turning the nut check to see if the pivot pin is moving with it. I've put many shifts through my b&m shifter in the past 2 years I've had it & it still works perfect.

Nope. Pivot pin is not turning..so to get the nut off, do you think a dremel with a cutoff wheel would work? Cutting through the nut..hoping that the nut is messed up & not the pivot pin. I'd have to be careful though, so I don't cut into the threads on the pivot pin..

It's weird though, the nut went on fine when I screwed it on a month ago.

Iv had a B&M short shifter on my 2g for a while now, and the stock shift knob is gettin a little worn. I tried the Greddy Counter weight but it doesnt thread properly. It only screwed on half way, exposing most of the threads and leaving the boot hanging down. This is weird because my stock shift knob threads on perfectly. Does any one have a B&M short shifter on their 2g that can recommend a knob that fits perfect?
