how much faster is stick vs auto in a gst...
ive only driven standard this would be my first automatic

It's hard to define faster. Autos get a bad rap. There very strong. You NEVER miss a shift. CW is not an issue. Easy to drive around town. Set up right there very hard to beat. ( I have a stick and an auto )
 
I'm not sure the difference in fastness so to speak but the way I know it is in a manual yolu have to left off the gas (somewhat) when shifting. In the auto you would stay in boost during shift a++ to me in a way. But a powerfull motor behind that a/t would prob be a problem if its a stock a/t. Hopefully an auto gst driver will pop in and have some more insight :thumb:
 
My experience has been the manual is faster in general. FWD also is going to make things difficult, but the automatic will actually be perfectly matched for the FWD. I personally liked my FWD automatic DSM since it was pretty light, more of a highway killer than a 0-60 mph car.
 
im not 100% sure in this case but with american cars generally the cam is alittle bigger in a manual due to needing less vacuum
 
My opionion, you don't get pick the transmission based on what is "faster" or possibly "better" but rather what you would be better with and what you are planning on doing.

Is this going to be a DD?
Track only?
What kind of build?

Auto will be more instant power and will be great for a DD in say a city or a lot of traffic. Manual is good to get better control of what the car will do as you have control. With specific tuning, you can get NLTS so that would disregard most of the slowing down assoiated with being manual.
 
i have a FWD auto and love it. i have an IPT trans and Shift Kit in it and it shifts faster than any manual out there. Even going to put in the transmission boost controller and the IPT Electro-Matic Manual Controller. also recommend and aftermarket tranny cooler too
 
I love my automatic gst its always in boost between shifts and is a great dd but I have never driven a manual before so I don't know if its faster. After I put my evo3 16g on it it pulls like crazy and now my tranny is slipping:(
 
Depends on what you want out of the car. I personally like sticks better because I think it enhances the overall driving experiance (aka it's more fun to drive). Plus you have much more control over you vehicle.
 
Drag racing= auto is usually the best choice in most vehicles
road racing= manual is the only way to go unless you have a shift system(paddle shifted or others) on your car that allows you to stay in a gear
 
With a/t for good power look into aftermarket torque convertors first, i think i found a stall one (good for drag). Manuals have the upsides but not everyone can shift perfect all the time . As said before A/T stays in boost since you stay on the gas (a ++). All depends on what you really expect out of the car really . An auto might not take as much abuse on a turbo ( have a 99 rs auto as a DD 420a of course so big diff :p). But i would follow what the seniors say (I've only been a DSM'er for like 7 yrs now) Best of luck to you and your build :thumb:

i myself, like manuals. My first car was a 93 eclipse 5 speed, and man i loved that car. Put a new motor in it, drove it for a few years. This guy i went to school with had a 99 s10 automatic and wanted to trade me . So i did (truck was in alot better shape than the eclipse) but i hated myself for trading after the first day. I dont know if it was just were it was an s10 or what but i absolutely hate automatics. i like the feeling of being in control. If you powershift wouldnt that be faster than and automatic? idk thats just my opinion

Its been proven as of late that Auto DSMs (liek autos in ANY other car) are not only more consistent but are less prone to breaking. Less is needed to make them fast and because of this a majority (and by majority I'd say roughly 70-80%) of the current fastest cars are auto with a lot more in the making.

It is what it is. Don't let people sell you that BS about "I like to shift my car" cause that's complete BS, I have a full manual bodied auto with a ratcheting shifter on it and it works no different than shifting my Dogbox except its a hell of a lot faster and cost 1/3 the price.
 
A/T have electrical issues and can be a pain to work on while M/Ts are straight forward for the most part. Like said before. Some of the fastest DSMs are Autos. Your choice. BTW I'm driving an Auto. And I do not have a shift box. :) No bias though. I like being able to control my gears in corners. So to me it really doesn't matter.
 
is this really a question? if you are a true car enthusiast then you would go manual. Hence why the ZR1 and the Z06 only come in manuals.

Also auto's are boring to drive. It makes me want to check facebook, drink coke, eat a cheeseburger, and talk on the phone all while staying in the rumble strips with the pedal to the floor.

I have a close friend of mine that runs mid 7's in the quarter on a manual.

So no one throw up the whole auto's are good for drag...
 
Heard that one DSM 1G AWD auto turbo owner tagged low 8's in the quarter on the strip.

True though, I did have a 1.8L with an auto and did like that driving it around town, but on the freeway where it was total pig slow with that small motor spinning that heavy F4A22 tranny.

I like manuals for the simple reason that I'm in control of the performance of the car along with engine braking and not fully relying on the brakes to slow the car down - which an auto will eat front brakes up three times a much than with a manual due to the factor of engine braking.

Go to a drag strip and count autos and manuals (regular synchronized manuals, no slipper clutch). You think most use autos because manuals are superior and they want to GIVE their competition an advantage?

On the street, manuals can be more fun to drive, mostly because of them feeling faster even if they're not, more control over what's going on, and get better mileage, but there is nothing wrong with an auto.

Manuals are good for gas mileage, and road racing, and the driving experience when absolute control of the car's balance is needed. A paddle shifter or something of the like that may be fully auto may still be a gearbox, instead of an automatic transmission. This setup would be better than an automatic in most all cases because it has a direct link to the engine.

Automatics are a little heavier than manuals, and need power to pump oil through them, hence why they get slightly less gas mileage. They will also be more consistent than a manual, and no human can shift a manual gearbox as fast as an automatic transmission. The torque converter tends to multiply torque on lower rpms so they are good for launches. There is no direct link to the engine because the torque converter always slips, except on ones with overdrive lockup. They are less harsh on the drivetrain because of the torque converter slip, and their internals are not any stronger or weaker than a gearbox. The gears may be, but for a 4-speed there are 2 or 3 clutches, and a band, so they can wear out. Boost also stays present between gears because you never lift off the throttle.
