1G Auto trans wont line up

Spent a good couple hours twisting and turning my trans to make it fit on my motor so I could put it back in first thing tomorrow morning. I was able to get the top two bolt holes to line up and the screwed in, but the bottom of the trans wont seat against the block and the bolts wont even reach. Its a auto trans on a 1g. Any reason why? I was thinking maybe my input shaft is not fully in my torque converter.

also some one else told me it is actually easier to install the trans after the motor has been put in the car because the auto trans has lift points and I would just need to remove the beam and lift it straight up. would that be my easier option? On my 5 speed I always pulled them and installed them as one.

First off, i see no dowel on the lower front bolt hole. Second, did you remove the converter. It seems as though the converter might not be seated in the trans all the way. When i install a fwd transmission i use some longer bolts that are the same diameter and thread pitch at the bellhousing bolts to get it started. Once you have 2 of them started you can just push the trans right up on the engine. Have you also tried to jack the engine up, the trans might be hitting the subframe a little bit.
 
the engine/trans in out of the car, the trans is sitting on a tire with the bell housing hanging off the end and the engine is on a crane. I was told to put the engine in and then install the trans but idk if that would be easier. The torque converter is bolted on to the motor already should I put it on the trans and do it that way?
 
Gotta remove the TC from the flex plate since the TC has to go in a certain way, which is called a "two click" install. The TC also runs the fluid pump, which is on front of the tranny case.

You take the TC out and you see two notches across from one another on the input shaft.
These notches runs the fluid pump mounted on front of the tranny case.
You put the TC first in the tranny, give the TC a turn until you hear one click (this is the TC connecting with the input shaft of the tranny), keep on turning and you'll hear a second click (which is connecting to the fluid pump).
Afterwards, the front edge of the TC should only be about a half inch from the face of the bell housing and it should just fit right up to the motor.
Then, is when you attach the TC to the flex plate through the inspection plate of the bell housing.
 
^^ its actually 3 steps inwards, not two. I just installed and indexed my converter this last weekend.

The easiest way for me with my auto's is to put the trans in first by itself, the install and index the converter 3 steps inward (if you look inside the trans pump seal where the converter seats you will see two little "notched" areas that match the end of the TC). Those little notches are what drive your trans pump and is the third step inward.

After the trans is in and bolted into place with the side and rear mount, then install the motor... I normally get it close, start 2 bolts if possible and then have to lift the rear of the motor a little bit to tilt the motor just right and it will slip right into the pilot bushing in the back of the crank as well as alignment dowels falling into place

From there it should bolt up easily. Then u can crawl under the car, pull the TC about 3/8" towards the motor and bolt the flexplate & TC together using red loctite.


Doing it that way I can have a motor and trans Installed in under 3 hours.
 
+2 on three notches before the TC is properly indexed. Always check it two or three times, rotating and pushing in and out a little until it indexes. Do complete rotations. You'll hate yourself if you dont.... I wish we had taken a picture of that TC when it was indexed, it sits back in there farther than you think.
Matt, do you think you could pull that motor one more time so we could take a picture....... :p:D

Ok I should have just left the tc in the trans, I didn't remove it before from its original spot, but thought it would be easier to line everything up the the converter on the motor, kind of like a clutch and flywheel (this is my first auto trans) So it is easier to install with the trans in the car first then, and not just as a whole unit.
 
You must have those two dowels in if they are missing..This might help...

Install engine alone into the car with flexplate installed
Put one quart of ATF into the converter
Seat the converter fully into the transmission bell housing
Lift transmission with converter installed into place making sure the converter doesn't fall out of place
Line up transmission and bolt it to the engine, again making sure the converter doesn't fall out of place
Install trans mount
Get underneath car and line up converter holes with flexplate holes through the trans inspection area
Install converter bolts using red loctite
Install axles
Fill trans with fluid

That's pretty much it...
 
^^ That way will work too but is alot harder to keep the converter into the trans where is is supposed to be.... if the motor and trans are out of the car, unbolt them and unbolt the converter from the motor. Then install ## trans by itself. Next put the converter in and then finally drop the motor in, bolt it to the trans and then bolt the TC to the flexplate.... then your done :thumb:
 
I already took the converter off and reattached it into the trans and got the three clicks, its far back. Now all I need is that dowel. there there a alternative I can get at autozone or maybe a hardware store? I dont have time to wait for shipping. It didn't that dowel when I pulled it apart. only the other side had one

called the dealer they dont carry it

Without the dowel the bellhousing will likely snap off the trans. You won't find one at a parts store. You will have to order one from the dealer, or get one from a salvage yard.
 
Depending on how much force was applied, you may have already broken the pump gears. Trying to bolt the trans to the engine with the converter bolted to the engine makes it impossible to seat the converter in the trans properly. Forcing the converter into the trans without lining it up first will break the pump easily.
