I am trying to get this car back together as cheaply as possible and after doing some reading I havent found much of an answer. Anyone here use just ATF+4 or something equivalent? I don't want to spend $80 on stuff from the dealership. This is a complete refill not just a filter change.

Also what to put in the X-fer case?? and Rear Diff?

The DSM automatic is sensitive to the ATF fluid. My Talon torque converter shutter after my local shop changed the ATF to a generic fluid. After replacement with ATF 4 the symptom went away after a couple hundred miles of adapting.

I just use the fluids recommended in the owners manual for Xfer case and rear diff.

so then ATF +4 is ok then?.....

Also I don't have the owners manual so I can't consult it.

DSM Mitsu trannies, being the F4A22 tranny, require SP-II fluids. Shove anything else in there and kiss the tranny goodbye. ATF+4 are for Chrysler Trannies. You can also use AMSOIL Universal Transmission Fluid in the DSM tranny.

Go to the dealership and beg a mechanic for a favor. The factory stuff is the best without going to Redline, Royal Purple, or Amsoil. Using lesser stuff is just asking for trouble and drivetrain on an awd isn't cheap. Save $50 on fluids vs $1k+ for a rebuild? Which one is really more inexpensive in the long run?

I have a manual trans and filled everything front to back with Royal Purple as I didn't have the time to wait for Redline to be shipped to me. I have high horsepower hopes once run out of parts to replace so I planned for the future.

well the price difference between 10 quarts of Valvoline High Mileage ATF +4 and a bottle of the lubegard and 10 quarts of the Diamond fluid from the dealership is only about $6. I will probably just go with the dealership and put what is recommended since the price is the same.
