ATF= Power Steering Fluid?

I have used ATF for power stearing fluid and have not had any problems., but other people will probably tell you not to. It is differnt from power stearing fluid and could make your pump wear out faster. but like i said, i've used it and havent had any problems so far.

Use what the manual says but keep this in mind....

Transmission fluid is designed to allow some friction and to be in an environment below 350 psi.

The power steering system does not want any friction and operates in an environment of at least 1000-1200 psi (most max pressures are between 1250-1600).

With increased pressure you have increased heat which means the ATF will break down quicker and lose its lubricating properties. ATF will work fine in most power steering systems but it is recommended that you flush it out on a regular basis (at least once a year) for the system to continue to work well.

The manual say's to use ATF. :dsm:

When you start modifying your car you have to make decisions about what you do. Obviously, the manual is not going to specify these kinds of changes (for instance, different weight oils, different transmission fluids etc. etc.). However, since you're not modifying your power steering system, I think it's a wise decision to follow the manual for what type of fluid to use.

Whats so hard about just using power steering fluid? Who cares if the manual doesn't say to use it, it's pretty much a common sense thing. ATF goes in automatic transmissions, and power steering fluid goes in your power steering system.

Not saying that ATF is bad to use, but is power steering fluid that hard to get your hands on?

ha amen, whats the big deal about putting power steering fluid in your car, power steering fluid is meant for power steering. much easier to do that then doing a yearly power steering flush. nothing wrong with atf but power steering fluid has been my choice in all the cars ive owned and its worked perfectly fine.
