oh, so really your logs are to compare with nothing?
these logs are fairly useless unless there is a control group (WOT run) and an experimental group (Acetone).

I'm still interested, deifinitely post back when you have done some more testing.
 
Well the firt log I posted a couple weeks ago was with acetone. The one I just posted today is without.

Both logs were done at the same outside temperature and humidity. Well the temp was the same, can't say for sure on the humidity.

But they are different days, both times with a full tank.

Outside temp was the same though.

What's weird is I thought there were some spots where it had more knock with acetone (by memory), but I guess not..

By the way, there were some points where I had 14 counts of knock. Are we mainly just concerned with the knock at WOT? I need help knowing what to look for and when, and deciding what to do based on the results.

I have a whole gallon of acetone, so if it looks good, I am happy to run it. It's cheap too.

Two questions for ya:

Was it better with the acetone or without?

Can I turn up the boost a bit, if so, approx. how much (Stock fuel, EVO 3 16G set at 10 lbs right now)?
 
I'll need to really spend some time looking at these logs to determine which was actutally better.
The logs are pretty hard to read usually there's only one pull form 2k-7.5k.

So I'd only be comparing 2 pulls, one with and one without. I'll work on it though and get back to you.:rocks:

I dont want to run straight race gas.
But If i could dump a 5 dollar booster in my tank when I want to go and have a little fun I would definatly do it.
 
There are octane boosters they sell, but I have tried them and I found a post somewhere on here that discussed it. I believe it boosts the octane up so slightly that there really isn't a noticeable gain at all. If it really did bump it up high then I think everyone would be using it. I think it says it bumps it up like 5 octane or something like that, but it actually bumps it up .5 octane I believe. I am not 100% sure but that is what I have experienced and also read on here.
 
Close. Octane booster sells for ~$1-3 depending on where you go. Each bottle advertises that the entire bottle of additive will give you 1 point of octane. What they DONT tell you is that there are 10 points to each 1 octane rating. I.E., 10 bottles = moving from 92 octane to 93 octane.
 
You can research do it yourself stuff like toulene.

Otherwise you might want to look into water or alcohol injection.
 
Yup, octane boosters will raise the octane of your gas by a few 'points' ... so a few tenths of 1 octane rating.
Toulene and xylene have ~116oct IIRC.
Or you could just buy a drum of SteetBlaze, C16, etc and mix that in to boost your octane.
 
I've been playing around with xylene, myself. Doesn't take much to get a noticeable result, even on CA's 91 craptane. Can pick up a jerrycan of it at your local hardware store, in the paint thinner aisle. But do your research before you just dump some in... need to get the right amount for best results (dumping in too much can supposedly make the car run worse), and it's good to know what it's really doing to make the car run better.
 
I have had good experience with the Lucas brand octane booster. Its like 9 buck's a can though. I can run 17psi with no knock on $10 gas(starting from about empty) and a whole bottle of booster. With out it the boost has to come down or I see about 4-7 counts of knock. Its supposed to treat a whole tank, but I use about 4-5 gallons of gas to 1 bottle. You can feel the difference though. The only down side is do the math and its about the same price as race gas. WTF This is on my basically stock 1g AWD.
 
NOS brand sells "Racing Formula" octane booster with nitromethane that ups octane 60 points (6 octane). Don't remember the price. I got some at Autozone.
Pretty sure even the 'Racing Formula' only raises octane 7pts.
The booster is ~355ml and is meant to go into a ~60L tank of gas... thats like half of 1% of your total volume of fuel. For it to raise the whole tank up 60 points, it would have to be rated at a zillion octane. (Somebody with a calculator can do the math, but the octane rating needed would be way higher than ... anything.)

Good point. Both xylene and toluene have been safely used for many years to increase the octane of gas. Xylene has a slightly higher octane value but toluene is a little cheaper and therefore has usually been the one more commonly used. In fact, many off the shelf octane boosters as well as some race gas have toluene as their primary octane boost ingredient. This article is well known to users of this method of octane enhancement.

If anyone is considering doing it make sure you read through this in full or do some searches. It can be used safely and effectively but follow some safety precautions (mostly common sense) and use the formula given in the article to create a mix that will fit your needs. Don't just haphazardly add a random amount of these chemicals to your tank.

BTW, since that article was written the price of toluene has gone up and it is now a little harder to find. But you can still get it at paint stores for approx. $12-15/gallon.

It may raise the octane that high when mixed with a small amount of gasoline, but not when mixed with a whole tank. Read up on how much toulene is needed to up your octane value signiffigantly and then tell me if 12oz of NOS stuff will do that much better.

Or just use some logic and math. As I understand it octane values top out around 120. I'm too lazy to do the math right now, but you can figure out what ratio of a 120 octane liquid to 91 pump would be needed to get you equivalent 97 octane.
 
I just add a couple gallons of Sunoco 112 race fuel to a tank of premium.

I'm pretty sure you can buy cam 2 in most speed shops in 5 gallon buckets too. it's like 110 octane. Add a gallon or two to a tank if you are going to run it hard or race it.
