I can't be the first person that has done this. I busted out both honeycombs in my MAF. Does anybody sell replacements ? Or have an idea about what I should do. The car is idleing very rough now and misses whenever I am not accelerating.

Will

my honeycomb at the bottom of my 1.8 MAF is damaged, so my check engine light comes on about 1 + 1/2 min after start-up. I know its the MAF ~ I read the code with a voltmeter. Where would one find a replacement honeycomb? Anyone know? Or should I just find another MAF at a junkyard?

My MAF is trashed, the large honeycomb thing on the front is totally gone. I also need to find one for cheap.

When you take the honeycomb restrictor ut of the intake tube are there any side effects besides a change in the sound of the intake? Check Engine light, crappy idle, things like that? Thanks :dsm:

i took mine out and i really got no side effects.i really dont think anything changed from it better or worse

i dont think so, not much changed,i took it out and put a injen intake on the car.it flows pretty good, with the honeycomb out it helped flow a little bit so i imagine it help a little bit,but very minimal.

by replacing the intake will that make your check engine light coem on alot? cuz ive noticed my C.E.L. comes on alot lately

I put a K&N filter on it and took the air box off. I couldn't find a tube so i had to make my own. I used a tube from a honda civic and cut it down about 4 inches and then i got another piece that my friend cut off of his cold air intake. It looks like it was made for my car.

Although I have a different engine than you, removing the honeycombs from my MAS resulted in the engine running like complete isht. From what I understand, the MAS cannot function properly without them. It would stall when i came to a complete stop and the idle was very rough. I noticed a loss in gas mileage also. I would not recommend it, IMO, it's not worth it.

And the car is running fine. Didn't really notice ant performance increase, BUT I was venting to the atmosphere, just for fun. My question is: Isn't the car supposed to run like ass with no honeycomb? I mean I've heard of people removing the lower H.C., but not the upper. I though it was bad for the car...

If it matters, I havent dremeled out the inside of the MAS yet, will that make a difference?

mine ran fine with no screens or lower half at all..........i said ran. but on another 1g it was horrible. after that motor i put a 2g on. dont ruin it, you dont want to have to buy another.

I am just wondering which honeycomb i could remove in my MAS, also could i remove both of them. attached is a little picture i drew so bare with my drawing its a little shotty. the picture is drawn the way i am looking at the MAS
Thanks
Chris

Why would you remove that just out of curiousity? I would think it would "straighten" out the air making the air flow better.

Remove the lower ONLY. DO NOT remove the upper honeycomb or the car wont run. Also be careful not to damage the lower in case you need to put it back in.

You remove the lower honeycomb for a number of reasons. By removing it you dont allow the airflow to develop the vortexes that the maf uses to count the air coming in. So thru that passage you now get unmetered airflow. This accomplishes two things. Since the ecu sees less air coming in that actually is entering the engine, it wont fuel cut as soon. Also, it will run leaner especially at idle so an AFC to correct is recommended but not always necessary. Incidentally if you put in 550s at the same time it works out pretty well.

Second thing this accomplishes is to help prevent maf overrun. The maf can only reach a certain karman hz number before it starts to lose counts. This will send a corrupt signal to the ecu and your fuel injector pulse widths will go crazy. Youll see a bunch of knock, timing retard, and all the usual badness that goes with it.

Other options: A while back before I got my AFC I picked up an Al Blaha maf (its a really hacked 1g maf with a flapper door to block air at idle so the car wont stall, and some electronics changes). The thing ran awesome without any fuel control at all. My only worry was that the flapper door would come off and get eaten by the turbo.

More recently, I was running a hacked 1g maf with just the lower honeycomb removed and the car ran much better with the honeycomb out than with the maf stock. This is on a big16g, Supra SMIC and 18psi. It ran ok that is until I went home to NC and it was 20 deg out. Then it started fuel cutting and overrunning again. I upgraded to a 2g maf and Im not looking back. You need an afc to make it work but again 550s at the same time tend to balance it out nicely. Plus its less restrictive and I know I dont have any worries of maxing it anytime soon.
