If newbies actually searched, they wouldn't be asking these kinds of questions.

If he knows about DSMchips, then that probably means he went to their site. Which states that it is only for EPROM ECUs.

If you didn't know, 2gNTs never came with EPROM.

The ECU will only work with the MT 97NT because that is the year that Howell/AFX chose first to test and tune their ECU.

1995-1996-1997-1998-1999 All have differences in their ECU. Why? I don't exactly know why. I read over at 2gNT.com that they will be testing the 98 or 99 (can't remember which) models next due to their simalarities, but not identical.

Maybe you should roll your eyes over some reading material. ;)

well im just saying you should help newbies out, not just give them a one word answer. explain. but i dont think that miamieclipse is a newbie, looking at his mod list. but still, explanation would be nice. but thanks for the info on the ecu

My 97 AFX ECU works fine on my 96 MT talon. And has been working fine for almost a year.

Wait a minute here... You used a part that specifically says 97 only, on your non-97 car? Your either really intelligent or you've got the biggest sack in the world yo. What kinds of gains you get off of it?
:thumb: :dsm: :talon: :laser:

Hey talon speed, would i be able to use that on my 99 or would i have issues? thanks

The main difference in ECU's for the 2gnt is 95 vs 96-99. The changes in the 96-99 models were slight. The 95 ECU was night and day to the later models. I believe there are people at 2gnt using ECU's from 99's in their 97's and vice versa. The last years of the 2gnt are all pretty much the same. If you know a 2gnter in your area with a 97 swap him ecu's for a day and see what is up. Now I will say I would not reccomend trying this if you are a rookie as there may be some re wireing required due to pin placement for certin items...

I emailed howell asking if the 97 would work in my 99, and if not, why it wouldnt and if they were making one for my 99. they responded by saying it wouldnt. i guess they forgot my other questions, but oh well. just thought i would let you know

If this helps any of you, If you go to ebay and type "420a" , you'll finda guy selling 420a ecu 'chips' for 95 through 99' nt's. Basically you send him your ecu and 2 days later he sends it back reprogrammed. Basically advance the timing by around 10 degrees, remove speed limiter, and increase redline to 7800 and change the fuel curves/maps etc. He also said although he hasnt done it yet due to no demand, he could do auto ecu's if need be, as well as just speed limiter reduce and higher redline - no advanced timing mod- for peopel who have turbo kits. He also does 4G63 eprom chips. I have th AF/X ecu in mine so I dont need one.

Now normally , one would be skepitcal (ebay), but I spoke to him once over the phone for about an hour once for a friend of mine.
Very nice guy, and even said to me if I can find someone off the forums that had a realtivly bone stock car, and access to a dyno, he'd do the reflash for free, provided said person posted the before and after dyno results. Otherwise, its $180. Cant beat that imo

Or you can look up "MegaSquirt" on ebay or hit up Mr. Slick on 2gnt that sells them premade for around $350 and under (depending where you get it). It s a custom stand alone ecu , but youre gonna need a labtop, some extra sensors, perhaps a wideband unit with a/f readout, serious tuning skills, and dyno tune it to get any real results.

would I need to replace the lifters and rockers for a redline at 7800 RPM? Also is the advanced timing and what not, safe in the long run for a daily driver? Any other info would be great.

Not really but it is recommended def. Also upgrade your springs and retainers if you plan on shifting at redline frequently. yeah its safe for a daily driver. I got a spare head on the side right now that im putting together, so for now, the most ive brought it to was 7k to be safe. It pulls though.

cams really bring the ecu on a na to life though.

umm you definetly are going to need to upgrade your lifters & rockers. If you upgrade cams you will need to get better/new retainers & springs. Are you really going to trust your stock lifers, rockers, retainers & springs which were designed to never go past 7200rpm? Well if you do have fun LOL, i would invest the $$$ in new lifters rockers etc etc

I was wondering if anyone could send me links to new lifters, rockers, springs etc. I looked on howell automotive and I know they are there but I couldn't find them. I am very interested in the ecu upgrade but want to get an estimate on how much it would cost to run this ecu to its maximum capability safely and for daily driving.

Thanks, Erik

Phat Ridz in Eden, NC has been working with the 420a for a few years now and has been building 420a drag cars, etc. They probably work with SRT-4s now, ANYWAY... they can reprogram ECUs I think. I know my friend with the neon was told that they can get big gains from tuning the ECU for a neon. (powered by a 420a also). So, maybe look them up on the web and give them a shout. I would, but I'm broke and lazy.
